MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks July 18

Bryce Harper, Philadelphia Phillies – OVER 1.5 Total Bases

Fantasy baseball managers and Philadelphia Phillies fans everywhere were excited to see Bryce Harper finally get back in the home run column over the weekend. It took a while, almost two full months to be exact, but maybe that Harper homer can help jumpstart a strong second half. Either way, let’s back his total bases prop tonight. After going 6-for-13 in the Phillies’ latest series vs the San Diego Padres, Harper is now hitting .385 with a .615 SLG in the month of July. He’s been swinging the bat well over the past month or so, and now the power may finally be returning. He has seven multi-hit games over his past 12 contests with 26 total bases in this span. Harper also has some key splits in his favor tonight with a .337 BA at home and a .322 BA vs right-handed pitching this season. He’ll face Milwaukee Brewers righty Julio Teheran. In their careers, Harper has dominated Teheran to the tune of a .404 BA (19-for-47) with nine home runs. That’s a large enough sample size to feel good about Harper’s chances tonight to get an extra-base hit, multiple knocks, or both.

Nathan Eovaldi, Texas Rangers – OVER 5.5 Strikeouts

The Tampa Bay Rays offense has been a profitable one to fade lately as it comes back down to Earth after a scorching hot start. Let’s do it tonight with Nathan Eovaldi’s strikeouts. The Texas Rangers starter is fresh off an All-Star appearance and boasts a strong 2.83 ERA with a 1.02 WHIP this season. Though he’s been under 5.5 strikeouts in four straight starts coming into tonight, this is a good spot for a better outing. First, Eovaldi will benefit from being at home, where he has a 27.2% K rate compared to a 22% K rate on the road. He’s averaging 6.7 K’s per home start with 6+ strikeouts in five of seven home outings. Plus, this matchup against the Rays is actually a better one than you might think. Tampa Bay has a league-high 28% K rate vs right-handed pitchers since the start of July – not to mention a .284 wOBA and .209 BA against righties this month. Eovaldi also struck out six on the road vs the Rays in June.
