MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks August 30

Gerrit Cole, New York Yankees – HIGHER than 7.5 Strikeouts

Although the New York Yankees have fallen out of the AL playoff picture, Gerrit Cole still has plenty to play for in this final stretch. He’s currently the betting favorite to be the AL Cy Young Award winner, but Luis Castillo is gaining steam lately. On that note, Cole and Castillo are tied with 181 strikeouts apiece before tonight’s games. A matchup against the Detroit Tigers here gives Cole a good opportunity to pull ahead in the race. The Tigers are striking out at a league-high 33.0% against right-handed pitching over the past week, with a low .275 wOBA in this recent span too. Detroit’s 26.5% K rate vs righties in August is pretty high as well. Cole can easily rack up strikeouts in this spot, even with this elevated 7.5 line. The New York Yankees’ righty just punched out 11 on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays last time out and he’s actually recorded 8+ Ks in four of his last eight starts since the All-Star break. While Cole’s season-long K rate is down compared to last year, it has picked up lately with a 29.9% strikeout rate since the break. Bank on him to keep it going in this matchup against the Tigers.

Corey Seager, Texas Rangers – HIGHER than 9.0 Fantasy Points

The Texas Rangers are right in the thick of both the AL West and AL Wild Card races. After winning last night, the Rangers have a good opportunity to pick up another W against the struggling New York Mets and they’ll likely do it with offense. The Mets are starting Denyi Reyes, a right-hander who’s spent most of the year in the minors. Reyes has a 7.50 ERA in his 12 innings of MLB work this season and he recently allowed five runs on eight hits in an August 12th start vs the Braves. Let’s back Corey Seager to lead the Rangers offense here. Seager has been hitting well all season and boasts a .330 BA and 1.079 OPS in the month of August. Over the past 15 games, the Rangers shortstop has accrued 11 RBI, 10 runs scored, 10 walks, four home runs, a .317 BA, and even one stolen base. He can put up fantasy points in multiple ways and should get into the double-digits in this favorable matchup. Reyes has allowed a .364 BA to left-handed MLB hitters this year while Seager is batting .352 with a 1.104 OPS off of righties.
