MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks August 16

Mookie Betts, Los Angeles Dodgers – HIGHER than 9.5 Fantasy Points

The Los Angeles Dodgers are rolling right now with Mookie Betts anchoring the potent offense as a big reason for the current nine-game winning streak. Betts is batting .377 with a 1.158 OPS in the month of August so far. He also has 14 runs scored, 13 RBI, and four home runs over the past 15 games. Betts swinging it like an MVP contender and he should keep it going tonight at home.

Milwaukee Brewers starter Wade Miley has actually been impressive this season, but his 4.68 xERA and 4.42 FIP are concerning for that current 2.90 ERA. Betts, meanwhile, will have some key splits in his favor here. He’s hitting .325 with a 1.077 OPS at home, compared to .257 BA and .869 OPS on the road. He also boasts better power numbers against left-handed pitchers (.675 SLG, .386 ISO) than righties (.545 SLG, .255 ISO). The cherry on top is that Betts has favorable career BvP numbers vs Miley: 9-for-19 (.474 BA) with five extra-base hits.

Matthew Liberatore, St. Louis Cardinals – LOWER than 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed

Matthew Liberatore has admittedly been very shaky lately, but he is coming off his best outing of the season. The St. Louis Cardinals left-hander tossed eight shutout innings against the Tampa Bay Rays with seven strikeouts, zero walks, and only two hits allowed in his previous start. Today’s matchup gives Liberatore a great opportunity at another impressive stat line. The Oakland Athletics have struggled offensively all season and the lineup has some poor numbers against left-handed pitching (.290 wOBA, .232 BA, 88 wRC+). Over the past two weeks, those splits are even worse with Oakland having a .211 wOBA, .185 BA, 27.8% K rate, .074 ISO, and 35 wRC+ against lefties. Some ugly stuff right there.

So, look for Liberatore to have a good outing again and limit the Athletics’ run-scoring. Five of the last seven starting pitchers to face Oakland have had fewer than 2.5 earned runs allowed. The A’s are also averaging only 2.8 runs per game over the last two weeks and their Vegas team total sits at just 3.5 runs tonight. Again, Liberatore has had some rough outings recently (12 ER over his last three starts), but getting Oakland at home is much easier sledding. Plus, the Cardinals' southpaw does have lower than 2.5 earned runs allowed in three of his five home starts this season.
