Wander Franco, Tampa Bay Rays – OVER 8.5 Fantasy Points
Wander Franco is off to a scorching hot start to the 2023 campaign. The Rays’ star shortstop is hitting .417 (10-for-24) with a 1.273 OPS, two home runs, seven RBI, four runs scored, and two steals across six games thus far. Franco is a big reason why Tampa is the last unbeaten team remaining in the MLB with an offense averaging 7.3 runs per game. After an off-day yesterday, the Rays return home for a series against the Oakland Athletics and a bottom-tier pitching staff. Tonight, Franco and his teammates will face A’s starter Ken Waldichuk – who gave up six runs, three homers, and nine hits in his season debut against the Los Angeles Angels. The left-hander pitched to a 4.93 ERA in seven big-league starts last year and could run into trouble against Tampa’s lineup here. Plus, the switch-hitting Franco will benefit from batting on the right side, where he has a career .339 BA and .945 OPS vs. lefties compared to a .265 BA and .731 OPS as a left-handed batter.
Brandon Woodruff, Milwaukee Brewers – UNDER 7.5 Strikeouts
Admittedly, it scares me to go against a pitcher of Brandon Woodruff’s caliber. However, the stats tell us that this strikeout prop is a bit inflated for his matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals. First off, yes, Woodruff did notch eight Ks in his first start of this season and is one of the premier strikeout pitchers in baseball. Even so, the Cardinals won’t go down easy tonight with just a 16.2% strikeout rate this year (2nd-best in MLB) and a 17.3% K rate vs. right-handed pitching (3rd-best). No starting pitcher has totaled more than seven strikeouts in one start against the Cardinals through six games so far this year. Plus, St. Louis also had a 19.9% strikeout rate vs right-handers last season – the third-best mark in the MLB. Even at home tonight, Woodruff getting to eight or more punchouts will be a tall task.
Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels – OVER 0.5 Runs
It’s never a bad idea to back Captain America, so let’s do it tonight in the Angels’ home opener. Mike Trout is batting .368 with a .571 on-base percentage so far and he’s scored five runs over the first six games – with at least one run scored in four of six contests. In his first game at home this season, Trout faces Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt. Over their respective careers, Trout is hitting .412 (7-for-17) against the Toronto starter and has plenty of familiarity with Bassitt from his days in Oakland. The Angels had an off-day on Thursday, so Trout should be feeling good at the plate in front of the Anaheim crowd tonight. The good thing about backing a runs scored prop with Trout is that he can get on base with a hit or walk and it doesn’t matter – we just need him to come around to score.
