MLB Underdog Top Picks April 4

Bo Bichette, Toronto Blue Jays – OVER 1.5 Total Bases

In case you haven’t checked out today’s MLB weather report yet, Kansas City is expected to get 25 mph winds blowing out to left with warm temperatures. It’s a great hitting environment, so let’s target one of those hitters from the visiting Blue Jays. Through four games, Bo Bichette is off to a hot start with a .421 batting average (8-for-19) and he just hit his first homer of the season yesterday in KC. Tonight, Bichette faces Royals lefty Kris Bubic, who struggled to a 5.58 ERA, 1.70 WHIP, and .306 BAA last year. Bubic wasn’t great at home, either, with a 5.80 ERA in 2022 at Kauffman Stadium.

This matchup sets up for Bichette to go over 1.5 total bases, whether it’s with a couple of hits or with one extra-base knock. Any right-handed batter with 25 mph winds at his back gets a boost anyway tonight. Plus, Bichette has hit well in Kansas City over his career with a .318 BA and five extra-base across 10 games.

Wade Miley, Milwaukee Brewers – UNDER 3.0 Strikeouts

Backing any pitcher to go under a low strikeout prop is always risky, but there’s a reason this number is so low. First off, Wade Miley has never been a big strikeout pitcher with an 18.4% K rate and a 7.1 K/9 ratio over his career. Miley finished with three strikeouts or fewer in six of nine starts last year while battling injuries. He comes into this first 2023 start after making just three Spring Training appearances and totaling only two punchouts in his lone spring start. That was on March 24th, when Miley threw only 34 pitches – and he only tossed 25 pitches in the previous start. It doesn’t seem like Miley is fully stretched out enough to even go deeper than five innings tonight.

Meanwhile, this matchup vs. the New York Mets is a tough one. The Mets have just a 17.7% strikeout rate this season (fourth-best in MLB) while their 13% walk rate is the third-highest in baseball. Even though New York was shut out last night with Brewers starter Freddy Peralta having success, we should expect a bounce back from the Mets lineup. A matchup against a contact pitcher like Miley is a good way to do so. Plus, multiple NYM hitters have good career numbers vs. Miley – including Starling Marte, Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, and Tommy Pham
