MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks April 27
Gerrit Cole, New York Yankees – UNDER 8.0 Strikeouts
It’s definitely risky picking against a pitcher of Gerrit Cole’s caliber, but some stats and trends point us there tonight. First, Cole’s 0.79 ERA is impressive to start this season and he’s looked dominant in multiple starts. However, there’s bound to be some subpar outings and negative regression coming. Cole has a career-low .224 BABIP and a career-high 89.3% left-on-base rate so far – plus, no home runs allowed yet. The New York Yankees starter has also benefited from pitching at home in four of five starts this year. Maybe a lesser performance comes tonight on the road against the Texas Rangers? This offense hits right-handed pitching well with a .349 wOBA (5th-best in MLB), a .264 batting average (4th), and a .344 OBP (5th) against righties. The Rangers also have a lower 22% strikeout rate vs. right-handers this season (11th-best in MLB) and that number is down to 21.4% over the past two weeks. Cole has K totals of 11, 8, 3, 10, and 4 this season with those two low-strikeout games in his past three outings.
Joey Lucchesi, New York Mets – UNDER 5.0 Strikeouts
After missing all last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, Joey Lucchesi is back in the New York Mets rotation. He made his season debut last week and looked sharp with seven shutout innings, nine strikeouts, and four hits/two walks allowed. Impressive stat line, especially in the K department, but Lucchesi also benefited from facing a strikeout-prone San Francisco Giants lineup that has a whopping 29.9% K rate vs lefties this season (2nd-highest in MLB). Expect Lucchesi to have a tougher time getting strikeouts against a feisty Washington Nationals offense that has only a 15.3% K rate against southpaws this year (2nd-lowest). These two matchups are literally on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to strikeout potential for lefty pitchers. Lucchesi had a 16:7 K:BB ratio across 15.2 innings in three rehab outings. Plus, the Mets may look to keep his pitch count a touch lower since he’s coming off an injury and he tossed 97 pitches last game.
