MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks April 24
Nathan Eovaldi, Texas Rangers – OVER 91.5 Pitch Count & UNDER 1.5 Walks
Let’s target two Nathan Eovaldi pitcher props in one of the best matchups on the board tonight. First, the MLB weather forecast is calling for some chilly temperatures in the 40s for this game in Cincinnati. Even at the hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark, the colder weather gives the pitchers an advantage here. Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Reds' offense is among the worst in the league against right-handed pitching this season. The Reds have a league-high 26.3% strikeout rate with a .297 wOBA (6th-worst), .231 BA (8th-worst), and .656 OPS (5th-worst) vs. righties. Over the past week of games, those numbers are even worse – 30.4% K rate, .233 wOBA, .195 BA, .500 OPS. The Reds lineup is struggling right now, averaging only one run per game in a current six-game losing streak.
Opposing starting pitchers are having a ton of success against Cincy and we’ll bank on Eovaldi following suit. The Rangers’ right-hander has just a 5.40 ERA this season, but his 2.26 FIP tells us some better outings are on the way. Eovaldi has gone over 91.5 pitches just once so far, but his pitch count has risen with each start this season – culminating with 95 last outing. Plus, he just missed it the start before with 91 pitches. This matchup vs. the Reds should allow him to go six-plus strong innings and get closer to 100 pitches. He went over 91.5 pitches in 12 of 20 starts last year, for what it’s worth. As for the walks, Eovaldi has gone under 1.5 walks in three of four outings so far. He’s had good control in recent years with a walk rate at 4.6% or below for three straight seasons coming into 2023. Eovaldi went over 1.5 walks in just six of 20 starts a year ago.
Matthew Boyd, Detroit Tigers – OVER 5.0 Strikeouts
When picking out MLB strikeout props today, Matthew Boyd isn’t the first name that comes to mind. However, the matchup and trends point to Boyd’s K total being on the higher side. The Milwaukee Brewers have the league’s highest strikeout rate against left-handed pitching this season at 32.5%. The Brewers also have just a .204 batting average (4th-worst), .266 wOBA (2nd-worst), and .585 OPS (2nd-worst) against southpaws. Over the past two weeks, Milwaukee’s lineup has been even worse vs. lefties with a 37.5% K rate and .189 wOBA – both numbers being dead last in the league by a decent margin.
The key thing to know, too, is that the Brewers haven’t faced a ton of left-handed pitchers overall this season. On the one hand, this is a small sample size to consider, but it also tells us that the Brewers are a bit overwhelmed any time a lefty does face them because it’s something unfamiliar. The last two left starting pitchers against Milwaukee both struck out nine (Marco Gonzales and Jordan Montgomery). As for Boyd, he only has K totals of four, four, and three in his trio of starts this season. It’s not great, though he’s faced some tougher offenses in the Red Sox, Astros, and Guardians. Expect more strikeout success against the Brew Crew tonight.
