MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks April 22

Fernando Tatis Jr., San Diego Padres – OVER 0.5 Singles

You may have heard that Fernando Tatis Jr. is back for the San Diego Padres. After serving the end of his PED suspension at the start of this season, Tatis has returned to the leadoff spot in the Padres lineup this week. He went 0-for-5 on Thursday in his first game back and then 1-for-4 on Friday night. That one hit was a single, for what it’s worth. Either way, expect him to start rolling at the plate soon. Tatis Jr. was on fire at Triple-A El Paso this year before returning to the majors. In eight games, he hit .515 (17-for-33) with a 1.802 OPS, seven home runs, 15 RBI, and 11 runs scored. Yes, it was against minor-league pitching, but it’s still a good sign that Tatis is feeling good at the plate. 

Despite the suspension and dealing with a fractured wrist last year, this is still a guy who hit 42 homers with 97 RBI and a .282 BA in the 2021 season. Tonight, the Padres will face Arizona Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly. The righty has an impressive 2.53 ERA this season, but he’s due for some negative regression as his 4.23 FIP and 6.08 xERA indicate. Kelly could run into trouble against a Padres lineup that’s a lot more dangerous with Tatis Jr. atop the order and poised to rebound after being shut out last night. Plus, Tatis has good career BvP numbers against Kelly, hitting .389 (7-for-18) with three homers. 

Tyler Anderson, Los Angeles Angels – OVER 4.5 Strikeouts

Anyone catch Shohei Ohtani dominating the Kansas City Royals last night with 11 strikeouts and seven shutout innings? Although Tyler Anderson is obviously not as good, let’s still bank on him also having success on the mound in this matchup. The Royals’ 26.7% strikeout rate is the second-highest in baseball and their .259 wOBA is the worst. This offense is simply terrible. Against left-handed pitching this season, Kansas City has a high 29.3% K rate and a low 5.5% walk rate with a poor .211 BA. 

Even though Anderson has a 6.75 ERA, this matchup vs KC is a lot easier than when he got lit up by the Blue Jays and Red Sox in the previous two starts. In the left-hander’s first start of this season, he tossed six shutout innings against the Athletics. That’s a more comparable matchup to this one and we can see Anderson have his way on the bump. Although he’s been held below 4.5 strikeouts in all three outings thus far, this strikeout-prone Royals team should give him more punchouts than those previous opponents have notably lower K rates.
