MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks April 17

Logan Webb, San Francisco Giants – OVER 5.5 Strikeouts

On the surface, Logan Webb is struggling this season with an 0-3 record and 4.76 ERA over his first three starts. However, Webb is due for some positive regression when he faces easier lineups. He had to go against the Yankees, White Sox, and Dodgers in those first three outings – a stretch that would give any pitcher trouble. Despite allowing a bunch of runs so far, Webb has gone over 5.5 strikeouts in two of three starts with 12 K’s against the Yankees in that first outing. He’ll face a Miami Marlins lineup that has a 25.6% strikeout rate vs. right-handed pitchers this season (5th-highest in MLB) and just a 7.5% walk rate (7th-lowest) against righties. Look for Webb to punch out six or more in this matchup and in a pitcher-friendly park in Miami.

Andrew McCutchen, Pittsburgh Pirates – OVER 1.5 Total Bases

Now back in Pittsburgh, Andrew McCutchen is having a resurgent start to the season after struggling in previous years. The 36-year-old outfielder is hitting .298 (14-for-47) while batting third most days in a feisty Pirates lineup that’s proving to be no pushover. McCutchen is on a current four-game hitting streak with over 1.5 total bases in five of the past 10 games, including a pair of homers in this recent stretch. Pittsburgh now heads to the hitter-friendly Coors Field, where the veteran McCutchen is batting .307 with a .948 OPS across his career. Plus, he’s had some BvP success against Colorado Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland (.286 BA in 28 at-bats). Furthermore, we should see some negative regression soon for Freeland, who’s had some luck in his first starts of this season. Props to our own Jon Impemba for pointing this out in a Tweet earlier today.
