MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks April 10

Bryson Stott, Philadelphia Phillies – OVER 0.5 Singles

If you take a look at the current MLB stat leaders, you’ll notice Bryson Stott is among the top-5 in batting average this season. The Phillies’ second baseman is locked in at the plate with a nine-game hitting streak to begin the year and a .429 BA (15-for-25) overall. Not only does Stott have a hit in every game thus far, but he also has multiple hits in six of the past eight contests. The other interesting thing is that 12 of his 15 hits have been singles, with just three doubles and no other extra-base hits. Although Stott doesn’t have great BvP numbers against Miami Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara (4-for-17 in their careers), there is a silver lining for this matchup. As dominant as Alcantara tends to be, he has had some issues on the road over the years – including a 3.01 ERA on the road last season compared to a 1.64 ERA at home. 

Julio Urias, Los Angeles Dodgers – OVER 6.0 Strikeouts

Urias is off to a strong start with a 2-0 record, 1.50 ERA, and 0.75 WHIP through his first two turns in the Dodgers’ rotation. The left-hander also boasts a 12:0 K:BB ratio over 12 innings with six Ks apiece in both outings thus far. Tonight, Urias faces the most strikeout-prone team in the MLB and should rack up plenty of punchouts. The San Francisco Giants have a league-high 28.6% K rate this season and the numbers vs. lefties get even worse. Against southpaws, the Giants have a woeful 40.0% strikeout rate and .213 wOBA – which are both dead-last in the MLB by a considerable margin. They just faced a lefty yesterday and Kansas City Royals starter Kris Bubic struck out nine over six scoreless innings. Expect Urias to have similar success in this rivalry matchup. 

Nick Pivetta, Boston Red Sox – UNDER 5.0 Strikeouts

Let’s round things out by going with the always-unpopular under pick. It’s never fun rooting against guys, but the numbers say Pivetta likely won’t have a ton of strikeouts tonight. In case you’ve been living under a rock, the Tampa Bay Rays are lighting up opposing pitchers en route to an undefeated record while averaging 8.3 runs per game. The Rays’ .410 wOBA and 16.5% strikeout rate lead the MLB so far. Tampa has especially been hammering right-handers with a .429 wOBA and just a 14.8% K rate against them. Plus, the offense has a high 13.5% walk rate vs. righties this season. Simply put, this is a terrible matchup for Pivetta. The Boston righty was decent in his first 2023 outing with six strikeouts and one earned run vs. the Pirates. However, the Rays will be a much tougher test here than Pittsburgh. It looks very unlikely Pivetta gets to five strikeouts in this spot. He finished with five Ks or fewer in 22 of 33 starts last season, including all three outings vs. Tampa.
