Vladimir Guerrero MLB Chalkboard Fantasy Pick: Over 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBI

Vladimir Guerrero has been one of the league’s best hitters this season. The Toronto Blue Jays’ first baseman boasts a .907 OPS with a .354 batting average, which ranks third among qualified MLB batters. Let’s back him today in a favorable matchup. 

Minnesota Twins starter Simeon Woods Richardson has struggled to a 6.30 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over 6 starts this year. The right-hander has a poor 6.02 FIP, and his 11.0% strikeout rate ranks dead last among MLB starters with at least 30 innings pitched. He’s also allowing a .309 batting average so far. 

It’s a good spot for Vladdy to stay hot. He’s batting .423 with a 1.044 OPS over the past 19 games. He’s gone over 1.5 combined hits, runs, and RBI in 12 of the last 19 contests as well. Meanwhile, Woods Richardson is allowing a .306 average and an .884 OPS to right-handed hitters. Guerrero is batting .356 with an .848 OPS vs. righties himself. Jake Irvin has been worth fading throughout his career. Let’s do it again today as the Washington Nationals’ starter faces a tough Milwaukee Brewers lineup. The strikeouts are what we’re targeting in this matchup. 

Irvin has a shaky 4.85 ERA over 6 starts this season. He’s actually been solid lately, though, and he just tossed 5 scoreless innings with 9 strikeouts in his latest outing. Irvin also now boasts a career-best 26.4% strikeout rate so far this year. 

However, we can count on negative regression in the swing-and-miss department. Irvin had just a 15.8% strikeout rate last year. He’s also never had a K rate above 20% in his three previous seasons. The punchouts should be tougher to come by in this matchup against Milwaukee. 

The Brewers have been tough on righties this year. Milwaukee has a 20.5% strikeout rate in the split (7th-lowest in the majors), to go along with a 12.0% walk rate vs. right-handers (2nd-highest). Irvin actually struck out 5 against the Brew Crew earlier this season. Still, that will be tough to duplicate in this rematch.
