Reds vs. Padres Prediction: Tuesday, June 9th

Let’s lead off the MLB best bets today with a National League matchup between the Cincinnati Reds and San Diego Padres. Both squads have been stuck in losing spells lately. The Padres are just 3-11 over their last 14 games, while the Reds are 2-9 over their past 11 contests. 

In last night’s series opener, San Diego took the 6-2 victory. Let’s back Cincinnati to get the win and even things up on Tuesday. The Reds have a notable pitching edge and the favorable offensive splits to come out ahead, even on the road. 

Chase Burns gets the start for Cincy. The right-hander is putting up Cy Young numbers this year, with a 2.05 ERA and 0.95 WHIP. He’s allowed 2 runs or fewer in 11 of his 12 starts and boasts a dominant 1.49 ERA over his last 6 outings. Plus, Burns’ 29.7% strikeout rate (92nd MLB percentile) and .200 xBA (88th) are elite metrics. 

The Reds’ ace can shut down the hapless San Diego lineup today. Against right-handed pitching this season, the Padres are last in the majors in wRC+, wOBA, and batting average. Over the past two weeks, they have a .240 wOBA, 53 wRC+, and .167 BA vs. righties – which are all last in the league as well. It sets up well for Burnes, who owns a 1.80 ERA over 5 road starts thus far. 

On the other side, Lucas Giolito brings in a 4.86 ERA and 1.74 WHIP for San Diego. The veteran’s 6.65 FIP and 5.14 xERA are even more worrisome. It’s a small sample size of just 4 starts, but Giolito has already allowed 10 runs across 16.2 innings pitched. That includes 7 runs allowed over his last 2 outings combined. 

Cincinnati has about a league-average offense against right-handers this year, with a .311 wOBA and 91 wRC+. Over the past two weeks, the Reds have had a .322 wOBA and 100 wRC+. Those aren’t excellent numbers, by any means, but they have enough firepower to get to Giolito in this matchup. 

Phillies vs. Blue Jays Prediction: Tuesday, June 9th

Let’s focus on an interleague matchup for our second round of MLB best bets today. The Toronto Blue Jays host the Philadelphia Phillies in what should be a lower-scoring game. We have a pair of proven veteran starters on the mound who can make this a pitcher’s duel. 

Zack Wheeler owns a 2.31 ERA and 0.83 WHIP over his first 8 starts for Philadelphia this season. The right-hander has allowed 2 runs or fewer in 6 of his 8 outings as well. He has the stuff to limit the Blue Jays on the road today. Wheeler has posted a 2.30 ERA across 5 road starts thus far. 

On the other side, Dylan Cease gets the start for Toronto. He’s missed the last two weeks with a hamstring injury, but will be activated ahead of tonight’s game. The righty owns a solid 3.05 ERA this year with an even better 2.59 FIP. He has also been dominant at home, posting a 2.34 ERA across 6 home outings. 

Cease has especially showcased elite strikeout upside this season. He boasts a 35.7% strikeout rate and 36.0% whiff rate, which rank in the 99th and 97th percentiles, respectively. Meanwhile, the Phillies have the 3rd-highest K rate in the league against right-handed pitching over the past two weeks. They also rank 26th in wOBA vs. righties overall this year.
