MLB Best Bets for May 9
Boston Red Sox at Atlanta Braves
The Atlanta Braves have a scary lineup that much is know but on the season they have averaged 5.37 total runs per game, which ranks out as the 5th best offense in the MLB right now. They will get to face off against Red Sox righty Nick Pivetta who has allowed at least 3 earned runs in the last 4 starts, which has lead to his current ERA of 4.99 on the season. So assuming Pivetta allows his usual 3 runs then the Braves just need 3 more out of the Red Sox bull pen which is one of the worst in the MLB. The Sox pen has given up 4.84 runs per game, the 6th most in the major leagues this season. The weather is also calling for the potential of 12-15 mph winds blowing to the outfield fence so take that as you will. Give me the Braves to go big tonight.
Pick: Atlanta Braves Over 5.5 Team Total Runs (+100 on DraftKings)
Texas Rangers at Seattle Mariners
This is weird to say but no offense has been better this season than the Texas Rangers. The Rangers have scored 6.56 runs per game this year and scored 9.33 runs over their last 3 games as well! Tonight they get a tough test in George Kirby on the mound for Seattle who has a 3.11 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 24 strikeouts through 6 outings. I think we all like Kirby and know he is a solid pitcher but in the face of the Rangers he could be in trouble. The Rangers have gone over in 21 of 34 games this season with 2 pushes for a hit rate of 65.6% on the season! That mark is 2nd in the MLB behind just the Red Sox and they have Andrew Heaney tonight on the mound. Heaney is not having the best start to May as he gave up 6 runs and walked 4 in a loss against the Diamondbacks last week. I understand that Kirby and the Mariners do well to avoid blow up spots but the total of 7.5 runs is just too low, have to respect what the Rangers have put together so far.
Pick: Texas Rangers & Seattle Mariners Over 7.5 Runs (+100 on Caesars)
Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Guardians
The Guardians aren't having the start to the season they expected but its early and with Shane Bieber on the mound its easy to get back on track! In 7 starts this season Bieber has held down an ERA of 2.96 with a WHIP of 1.07 and 30 strikeouts. He is 2-1 on the season with many no decisions but that's thanks in large part to a lack of run support. He should have no problem harrassing this Tigers lineup that has averaged 3.74 runs per game this season, which is the 3rd fewest in the MLB. Bieber will also be going head to head with Michael Lorenzen who is a up and down starter who has allowed 11 earned runs in his 2 worst starts combined but also just 1 earned run combined in 2 very nice starts. I will take the consistency of Bieber though and pray the Guardians find the bats tonight at least early on in the game as I have Cleveland on the 1st 5 innings run line.
Pick: Cleveland Guardians 1st 5 Innings -0.5 (-140 on DraftKings)
