Catchers Allowing the Most Stolen Bases

The final piece of the puzzle for finding the best stolen base predictions involves looking behind the dish at catcher pop times and throwing accuracy. How many times teams attempt to steal a base on a particular catcher is a strong indicator of who we expect to see doing the most running today. Favorite Bets: 

Jose Ramirez, Cleveland Guardians (+269)

Ramirez is no stranger to Casey Mize, as he’s 6-for-14 off him in his career, and when he gets on base, the odds should be in Ramirez’s favor. Mize has one of the higher stolen base attempts against rates in the league (3.8%), and as a team, the Guardians have the fourth-most stolen bases since the All-Star break. For what it’s worth, Ramirez has a 90% success rate on the year vs. RHP, and he’s yet to be caught stealing at home in 2026. It’s been a few days since Ramirez has swiped a bag, but he should have every opportunity to join the fun this afternoon, so long as the weather holds in Cleveland.

JJ Wetherholt, St. Louis Cardinals (+378)

There are 33 pitchers in Major League Baseball who have allowed at least 10 stolen bases, and the average number of pitches thrown with the lead runner at first or second (SB opportunities, per Baseball Savant) is 644 pitches. Edward Cabrera has thrown just 376 pitches! Jose Alvarado has thrown the least at 320, then it’s Cabrera at 376, and then Casey Mize (see above) at 421. Wetherholt doesn’t boast elite speed (56th percentile sprint speed), but he has a .359 OBP against RHP, and 10 of his 13 stolen bases on the year have come against righties. I’d expect Carson Kelly to catch for the Cubs today, and he has a below-average 16% caught stealing rate on the year. Furthermore, the battery of Cabrera and Kelly has a 14% caught stealing rate (1-for-7).
