The New York Islanders will have to do some work to fit Mathew Barzal under the cap.

Ryan Pulock signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Islanders, which leaves them with $3.9 million left in projected cap space. That's not enough to re-sign restricted free agent Barzal, even if he's willing to take a discount. The Islanders are getting a second buyout window on Friday, but they can only buy out players with a cap hit of $4 million or higher and the obvious targets like Andrew Ladd and Johnny Boychuk would actually only result in minimal cap savings (each of them less than $1 million against the cap) because of how their contracts were structured. In other words, a buyout isn't likely to be the answer for the Islanders. They're probably going to have to make a trade, either moving a bad contract with a sweetener attached to it or a player of some value instead. Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello might have to get creative.
