Jake Evans feels being taken with the 207th overall pick was “almost a blessing.”

Evans didn't have any pressure on him when he was drafted by Montreal in 2014. He went to Notre Dame though and became an offensive force in the NCAA. After four seasons playing college hockey and one full campaign in the AHL, he made his NHL debut last season, scoring two goals and three points in 13 contests. He signed a two-year deal with Montreal on Wednesday with the second season of that contract being one-way. “Going to school, I was able to focus on getting better every year," Evans said. "When I signed my first contract, I kept the same mentality. I wanted to improve every year and keep going. Being a seventh-round draft pick (No. 207 overall), no one was expecting much from me and it’s a big surprise if I do well. That’s been my mentality, just keep working, and it’s also nice to prove people wrong.” He still has a lot of work ahead of him, but he's turned out to be a great pick for Montreal. He hasn't been the only player in that draft that's vastly exceeded expectations though. Ondrej Kase was taken with the 205th pick and Victor Olofsson was taken 181st overall. The very last player selected in that draft at 210th, Jacob Middleton, has also made it to the NHL. Sep 24 9:58 am (EST)
