The Athletic's Greg Auman reports the Bucs signed RB Giovani Bernard because the team's running backs struggled with drops in 2020.
It's true: No backfield had a higher drop rate (14.7 percent) than Tampa last year. That's more than double the league's average drop rate of 6.6 percent. Leonard Fournette had seven drops on 47 targets, Ronald Jones had five drops on 42 looks, and rookie Ke’Shawn Vaughn dropped three of his 10 targets. It proved an irritant for checkdown master Tom Brady, and the Bucs were determined to address the issue this offseason, briefly courting James White before he re-signed with New England. Jones and Fournette took turns as the primary pass catcher out of Brady's backfield; neither had much success until Lombardi Lenny's impressive postseason run. Bernard's blocking prowess, according to Auman, was also a selling point for Tampa. Pro Football Focus gave Bernard its seventh-highest pass blocking grade out of 70 graded backs in 2020, compared to Jones (44th) and Fournette (65th). Even so, you'd be hard pressed to find weekly fantasy value in Bernard. Apr 13 12:13 pm (EST)
