Erick Fedde allowed one run and threw 28 pitches (12 strikes) on Sunday in his Grapefruit League debut against the Cardinals.

Fedde finished with one strikeout and also issued a pair of walks. He’s locked in a heated competition with Joe Ross and Austin Voth for the Nationals’ fifth starter job this spring. The 27-year-old righty registered a respectable 4.29 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 28/22 K/BB ratio across 50 1/3 innings over 11 appearances (eight starts) last year, but needs a strong performance in exhibition contests to have any shot at making the Opening Day roster. There’s a possibility that all three righties could get open the year in the majors, at least during the early portion of the regular season, but Ross is considered the heavy favorite to secure the final rotation spot. This is a position battle NL-only fantasy managers should be monitoring closely. Feb 28 2:16 pm (EST)
