The ATP and WTA finals in Washington, D.C. feature four players who have all found or returned to strong form at just the right time. On the men’s side, Alex de Minaur takes on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a battle between two of the best hard-court athletes on tour. The women’s final features Leylah Fernandez and Anna Kalinskaya, each looking to cap off an impressive week with a breakthrough title.

ATP Final: Davidovich Fokina vs De Minaur

De Minaur leads the ATP in hard-court wins this season and returns to the Washington final for the first time since 2018. He’s been efficient and has used his movement and consistency to wear down opponents. The Aussie is also coming off a 33-unforced-error performance against Corentin Moutet and was slow to serve out the match despite a heavy lead in the second set.

Davidovich Fokina followed up a late-night comeback win over Taylor Fritz (in which both were absolutely spent in the final set) with a straight-sets performance against Ben Shelton. The Spaniard is striking his forehand well and finding good spots on return, looking more stable than usual in back-to-back matches. His spotty composure when there’s tension gives me caution.

The head-to-head is 2–2, but De Minaur has won both of their outdoor hard court meetings. His consistency and court coverage give him a slight edge, but Fokina’s return pressure and shotmaking will keep the match close.

WTA Final: Fernandez vs Kalinskaya

Fernandez went the distance in a lengthy semifinal against Rybakina, leaning on her stamina and shot tolerance to come through in three tight sets decided by tiebreaks. She’s been focused in close sets and hasn’t looked worn down at any point.

Kalinskaya has been steady throughout the week and hasn’t dropped a set. She’s clearly comfortable in these conditions and has done well to dictate play early in rallies. Kalinskaya was sharp off the ground in her semifinal, especially on the backhand side, and played clean tennis from start to finish.

Their only previous meeting came in 2021 on hard court, with Fernandez winning in a close three-setter. That match was a while ago, but Kalinskaya's aggressive baseline tempo and Fernandez’s counterpunching instincts set the stage for another tight encounter.

Mubadala Citi DC Open Free Pick & Best Bet

ATP Best Bet: Over 22.5 Games (-115)

With a split head-to-head, surface prowess, and both players capable of holding through stretches, this match profiles for scoreboard pressure and at least one extended set.

WTA Free Pick: Over 21.5 Games (-105)

Fernandez is coming off a long, physical battle and Kalinskaya is in form. With both players pushing for a meaningful title and the styles matching up well, this could easily stretch beyond 21.5 games regardless of winner.
