Kansas legalized sports betting on September 1. The goal was to beat the NFL season, and Kansas made it happen. However, please note that online and retail betting will begin a soft launch on September 1 and officially launch on September 8, which is ultimately when the first NFL game will be played this season.

Governor Laura Kelly signed the sports betting legislation into law on May 12. Now Kansas will need approval for the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission regarding advertising regulations. But that won’t stop Kansas from allowing sports betting online and in retail.

How Did Kansas Sports Betting Become Legal?

Getting legalized in Kansas wasn’t an easy task. In the last couple of weeks before September 1, a lot of shuffling had to be done before Kansas could legalize sports betting.

On August 19, the office of Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt admitted that there were “significant” legal issues with Kansas sports betting regulations. Therefore, the office wouldn’t approve regulations until the agency addressed those problems.

By August 22, the Kansas Attorney General’s Office completed its review and found many shortcomings but approved the three sportsbooks listed above.

Lastly, on August 25, the Kansas Lottery got the Attorney General to sign off for its regulations, helping sports betting soft launch by September 1.

The Kansas Lottery announced that six online sportsbooks have been approved to launch on September 1, 2021. Those sportsbooks include DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, PointsBet, FanDuel, and Barstool.

Kansas will also have two retail sportsbooks that are also approved. Meanwhile, two other retail sportsbooks are still working on their launch date and won’t be ready by September 8.
