Is Sports Betting Legal In Kansas?
Kansas legalized sports betting on September 1. The goal was to beat the NFL season, and Kansas made it happen. However, please note that online and retail betting will begin a soft launch on September 1 and officially launch on September 8, which is ultimately when the first NFL game will be played this season.
Governor Laura Kelly signed the sports betting legislation into law on May 12. That law went into effect on July 1, allowing sportsbooks like FanDuel, Bet MGM, and DraftKings to offer early welcome bonuses to customers. Eventually, Kansas Attorney General signed off on regulations on August 25.
Here are our best Kansas pre-launch sportsbook offers:
- $100 in free bets on launch day from FanDuel Sportsbook
- Instant $100 in free bets plus entry in $100k sweepstakes from DraftKings Sportsbook
- BetMGM gives Kansas residents $200 in free bets.
Now Kansas will need approval for the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission regarding advertising regulations. But that won’t stop Kansas from allowing sports betting online and in retail.
How Did Kansas Sports Betting Become Legal?
Getting legalized in Kansas wasn’t an easy task. In the last couple of weeks before September 1, a lot of shuffling had to be done before Kansas could legalize sports betting.
On August 19, the office of Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt admitted that there were “significant” legal issues with Kansas sports betting regulations. Therefore, the office wouldn’t approve regulations until the agency addressed those problems.
By August 22, the Kansas Attorney General’s Office completed its review and found many shortcomings but approved the three sportsbooks listed above.
Lastly, on August 25, the Kansas Lottery got the Attorney General to sign off for its regulations, helping sports betting soft launch by September 1.
Where Can I Bet On Sports In Kansas?
The Kansas Lottery announced that six online sportsbooks have been approved to launch on September 1, 2021. Those sportsbooks include DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, PointsBet, FanDuel, and Barstool.
Kansas will also have two retail sportsbooks that are also approved. Meanwhile, two other retail sportsbooks are still working on their launch date and won’t be ready by September 8.
How To Bet On Sports In Kansas
Once Kansas officially launches, there will be six different platforms that you can bet on. Everyone bets on different platforms for various reasons. Some bettors care more about an easy-to-use interface, while some care more about the odds. With six other sportsbooks launching, you will be able to line shop and find the best lines.
If you’re a bettor looking to take sports betting seriously in Kansas, I recommend line shopping.
If you’re sports betting for entertainment, I’d still recommend line shopping, but some sites have better options when it comes to cashout options, payment options, and all other kinds of things. Find what works best for you, and be responsible.
- Sign up for one of the six online sportsbooks and make an account. Again, there are two current retail sportsbooks where you can also place a wager. For a complete list of places to bet on sports in Kansas, check out the ‘Where can I bet sports in Kansas’ section above. Be sure to look at our online sportsbook reviews, which include all of the sports and markets they offer, deposit and withdrawal options, and check out our bonuses page here for the best promo codes and offers before registering for an account.
- Once you’ve registered on a site, you must deposit funds into your sports betting account. These sites offer deposit bonuses or matches (or a free bet). Make sure you’re maximizing the promotion to earn the most money to help build your bankroll. When depositing, choose your preferred payment method, and deposit the amount you wish to credit to your account.
- Once the money is in the account, it’s time to place a bet. Most sites make it easy to find the event and bet you’re looking to place. Some even have a search bar to make things even more accessible.
- Once you find the event that you want to wager on, you will see many options with odds next to every type of bet.
- Click on the wager type you’re looking to bet on, and it will add the selection to a bet slip. It’ll then give you an area to add your wager amount. Once you type in the amount of money you want to wager, you will see your potential payout, which is the amount you will return if you won. Select submit, and your wager will then be complete!
Can You Bet On Sports In Kansas?
You can now bet on sports in Kansas officially on September 8. The legal age to gamble in Kansas is 21, and you must be physically in Kansas to sports bet on the mobile apps.
Eventually, there will be a maximum of 12 online sportsbooks with four commercial casinos in Kansas. Each of those casinos can host three online sports betting skins on their license.
If you decide to bet in Kansas, the betting tax rate is set as 10%, which is a reasonable tax rate for sports betting.
However, what stands out the most is that bettors in Kansas don’t have any restrictions regarding sports betting. Many states have banned sports bettors from betting on college teams within their state. But Kansas has announced explicitly that they will take wagers in college sports for all Kansas college teams.
This was a smart take by Kansas, understanding that their sports fans are mainly college sports fans. The Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas State Wildcats, and plenty of other college teams will have people betting their games from their sofa in Kansas. Not many states can say this.
Lastly, if you’re unhappy with the six online sportsbooks launching on September 8, you’re in luck. Bally Bet, Fox Bet, Golden Nugget, and PointsBet are expected to launch in Kansas as well, eventually.
As always, sports bet responsibly! Only bet what you can afford to lose. Also, don’t chase losses. It’ll only make things worse. Other than that, enjoy all of these sites. Enjoy the promotions that accompany it, and make some money!
