PGA DFS Coverage for the 3M Open

Congratulations to Brian Harman, the 2023 Champion Golfer of the Year. Good to see a player who has grinded for a long time on the PGA Tour take down his first major championship. While I could do a lot more on what happened overseas last week, I’ll save that for my playbook. This week in Minnesota at the 3M Open, it’s all about qualifying for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. This is the first year that only the Top 70 players in the standings participate in the first leg at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. This is the fifth edition of the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities. This tournament was originally called the 3M Championship and played as a PGA Champions event for 26 years before getting upgraded in 2018. I know we’re a couple of weeks past the 4th of July but we should see some fireworks this weekend.

The Field: 3M Open

The major golf season has concluded and with it goes the star-studded fields we’ve been accustomed to seeing week in and week out. The 3M Open has never hosted the cream of the crop but we will see the likes of Tony Finau (defending champ), Cameron Young, Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae Im, Sahith Theegala, Tom Hoge, Billy Horschel, Emilliano Grillo, and Justin Thomas carry the torch this weekend for the PGA Tour. Thomas is surprisingly outside the Top 70 coming into this weekend and needs good showings over the next two weeks to make the FedEx Cup Playoffs. We will see young phenom Ludvig Aberg tee it up once again alongside the red-hot Sepp Straka who won at the John Deere and finished 2nd at the Open Championship. The golf caliber will be solid in the Gopher State over the weekend.

The Course: TPC Twin Cities

TPC Twin Cities was established over 100 years after last week’s venue Royal Liverpool. The 22-year-old course was designed by Arnold Palmer with Tom Lehman. The average winning score over the first four editions of this event is 18 under par. It will play as a Par 71 and stretch out 7,431 yards and feature bentgrass greens. We are looking for solid drivers of the golf ball, especially distance which is one of the reasons we saw Cameron Champ take home the title in 2021. These players will need to go low and do it consistently throughout the weekend to have a chance at bringing home the hardware.

Weather: Blaine, Minnesota

It will be quite a change of pace for the players who participated in last week’s Open Championship. They will see extreme heat and humidity with temperatures in the low 90s on Thursday and Friday. It will cool down slightly over the weekend into the high 80s but those moisture wicking shirts will come in handy in the Twin Cities this week.

  • Keith Mitchell +4500
  • Taylor Pendrith +5500
