Today's two-game NHL DFS slate is highlighted by Auston Matthews who is due for another big night. Also don't miss out on some of the great value plays available on defence today with Adam Gaudette of the Senators facing the Devils. As always don't forget you can use the lineup generator to help put your lineup together as well.
Hurricanes at Maple Leafs
The Hurricanes essentially have four forwards that you can base your lineup around. Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov, Vincent Trochek and Teuvo Teravainen. Aho is your most certain quantity, he is a point per game player, who is very capable of scoring goals, Svechnikov, provides similar value, he hasn’t produced as many points, but he does lead the Hurricanes in shots, Teravainen is in the same vein but he scores less than Aho and Svechnikov and lastly Trochek has the most potential value as he shoots less, and scores the least amount of goals. With this matchup being in Toronto I would lean toward paying down to Trocheck and playing him with Svechnikov as they are typically on the same line, and both see time on the top powerplay. Keep in mind Teravainen is a game-time decision and this could cause some line shuffling to occur. Lastly, if you’re looking in the bargain bin, I would look to see who the wingers are that will be on those top two lines. This could be one of Jesper Fast, Seth Jarvis, Martin Necas or Nino Niederreiter. Toronto’s lineup plays out in a similar fashion. You have two bankable lines, mind you there isn’t much of a discount to be found. Auston Matthews is the primary target and he can be stacked with Mitch Marner, or you can look to the second line and go with John Tavares with William Nylander. You can look at Michael Bunting or Alex Kerfoot if you’re looking for some cost savings to complete your stacks.
For Carolina, the obvious play on defence is Tony DeAngelo. He is the power-play quarterback and on a team that has the capability to score as Carolina does, if anyone on defence is going to get multiple points he is your most likely choice. If you’re looking to pay down though you can find value in Brett Pesce. He will block shots, and give you some shots while playing between 21 and 23 minutes per night. For Toronto, you’re looking at Morgan Rielly at the top end. He has points in four of his last five games and has upside with points, but not much floor in shots and blocked shots. If you’re looking to pay down on Toronto, I think you are taking more risk, but Rasmus Sandin does play 20 minutes a night, and he has offensive upside, but not much of a floor as he isn’t a consistent shooter or shot-blocker, but you’re going to get him near the minimum price which can be worth the risk.
Frederik Anderson revenge game you say? That is a narrative you can look at in this game, but one I would only be willing to use in a GPP. Toronto comes into this game as the favorite, but Andersen has been great on the road this season sporting a 0.931 save percentage in 16 road games, and this is a winnable game for Carolina even if they are not the favorites. Wait…there is more revenge? Petr Mrazek is getting the start for Toronto tonight. He has played well in two of his last three games, and he could be motivated tonight facing his former team who chose to not offer him a deal in the off-season.
Devils at Senators
The Devils are tough to read in this game with Jack Hughes out. Jesper Bratt has easily been their most productive player, but the drop-off after that is steep. Nico Heisher is the next best bet, but he only averages 0.62 points per game, although he should see more minutes with Hughes out. For Ottawa, they also have their injury woes, but Brady Tkachuk is in a solid place to perform tonight even with Josh Norris out. He has five shots or more in three of his last five games, including a 12 shot game, and he had three points in his last two games leading up to the All-Star Break. At center, you can look to get some value from Tim Stützle who has been playing well, and if you’re looking for deeper values Adam Gaudette looks to be getting top power-play minutes and he has been putting shots on goal while being at the minimum price.
When we look at the Devils' blueline it's a situation that is likely best avoided today. Damon Severson has cooled off, we haven’t seen a lot of production from Ty Smith, and Dougie Hamilton is still out. Ottawa’s situation isn’t entirely better. Thomas Chabot is capable of hitting the shots and blocked shot bonuses on DK, but he isn’t a reliable source of points which makes his price tag hard to pay for. He holds more value on Yahoo where you could see a plus-minus bonus.
In goal, we are expecting the Devils to go to Jon Gillies today. Despite getting shelled in his last start, he did have four good starts against good competition(Carolina, Tampa Bay, Dallas, and Los Angeles). The issue is that in spite of Gillies' play, the Devils didn’t win any of those games, so he can be tough to pay up for unless he is going to make 35 saves or more. Matt Murray will get the start tonight for the Sens. he hasn’t lost a game in regulation in any of his last five starts, and with Ottawa at home, and New Jersey missing some key players he should be a good value tonight.
