🏒NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 4/9

🔥Toronto Maple Leafs vs New York Islanders Prediction

The New York Islanders need a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, while the Toronto Maple Leafs are hoping to lose to secure a bottom-five finish and retain their 2026 first-round draft pick. Peter DeBoer will be making his coaching debut, which often gives a team a boost. The Maple Leafs rank last in shots against on the road and will be starting Artur Akhtyamov, who will be making his first career NHL start. The 24-year-old is likely to receive very little defensive support, and it may be too much to expect him to excel under these conditions. We recommend taking the Islanders on the puck line but only in regulation to ensure protection in case they can't cover the spread or score an empty-net goal.

🔥Pittsburgh Penguins vs New Jersey Devils Prediction

Don’t look now, but Rickard Rakell has scored seven goals in the last five games and has averaged at least three shots in all but one of those games. The Penguins have a strong roster with several players capable of scoring, but Rakell is on fire, and we’re going to ride that momentum. Tonight, the Devils will turn to Jake Allen as their goaltender. He has performed well this season, but he is still not quite elite. Additionally, Luke Hughes has been ruled out for the season due to injury, which significantly weakens a fragile blue line. We’ll place some bets on the Penguins' forward to help continue the streak.

🔥Calgary Flames vs Colorado Avalanche Prediction

In their last meeting, Colorado dominated, scoring five goals in the first period and ultimately winning 9-2. The Flames have struggled on the road this season, particularly with goalie Dustin Wolf, who has a 3.86 GAA and a .877 SV% when playing away from the Saddledome. In that game against the Avalanche, he allowed four goals on just 16 shots and then followed up that performance by conceding six goals against the Vegas Golden Knights. That totals 10 goals allowed in the last 3.5 periods played on the road. While Colorado hasn't been performing at their best in recent games, they are known for their ability to score heavily at home, and we can expect it to come out strong in their next matchup.

🏅Goalie of the Day: Dan Vladar - PHI

I might be missing something, but why is Dan Vladar priced at $7,500 on DraftKings against a struggling Red Wings team? While Detroit isn't mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, that outcome is approaching quickly. John Gibson is starting for his team, but he has been underperforming at home. In contrast, Vladar has impressive road numbers, allowing only three goals in his last three starts. This presents a great opportunity to snag a goalie that many players are likely to overlook at a discounted price. I recommend locking him into your lineups and moving on.

🏅Honourable Mention: Anton Forsberg - LAK

We're taking a strategic approach with Anton Forsberg. The Kings' goaltender has been performing well at home, boasting a 2.65 GAA and a .911 save percentage. He has also won his last two starts. While Los Angeles struggles to score at home, the goalie shouldn’t be blamed for this lack of offence. Additionally, the Canucks are currently the lowest-scoring team in the NHL, making this a favourable matchup for Forsberg. Although his price is relatively high and he might not face enough shots to achieve a save bonus, he remains a reliable option if you're looking for someone safe to bet on.

🏅Skater of the Day: Martin Necas - COL

Let’s be clear: Nathan MacKinnon and Nikita Kucherov are elite choices for tonight’s games, but when it comes to value, they need to accumulate multiple points and a high number of shots to justify their price tags. While MacKinnon is capable of achieving this, if you’re looking for a similar upside without spending close to $10,000, Martin Necas is the way to go. He has been consistently generating points, and his shot volume has been solid over the last five games. This is a great opportunity for him and the team.

🏅Honourable Mention: Matthew Schaefer - NYI

What Matthew Schaefer has accomplished this season is truly remarkable. He is playing a significant number of minutes and has scored 22 goals. Even with a new head coach, his playing time should remain well over 25 minutes per game for the rest of the season. As mentioned earlier, the Maple Leafs allow the most shots against, and they have a rookie goalie making his first career start. Schaefer tends to perform better at home, which means he could take a lot of shots and potentially score some points, making it very likely he will deliver good value.

🏅Value Play of the Day: Porter Martone - PHI

Porter Martone's price has significantly increased since his NHL debut, but he remains undervalued on DraftKings. He has recorded three points in his last two games, but what stands out the most is his shot volume. Although the Flyers average just 25 shots per game, Martone has managed to take five or more shots in three of his first five NHL games. This high shot volume alone makes him a strong candidate to meet value without necessarily needing to score. Given that John Gibson has struggled at home, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Martone add another point to his total.
