Penguins vs. Rangers Prediction

While we have no stats this season to lean on we can look back into the annals of history for wagering guidance here on Day 1! Over the past 5 seasons the first week of the season sees the over hit on game totals of 5.5 goals more times than not. To be more specific the over hits 62% of the time in game total lines set at 5.5 in the first week of the NHL season. Why this is would be up to speculation but I always just assumed its the goaltending is rusty and their preseason starts don't prepare them for the flow and speed of an actual game. 

On top of history we do know that the Penguins defense is projected to be one of the worst units in the league led by Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson who have no interest in playing in their own zone. The Rangers will also be playing with big time motivation as their new head coach Mike Sullivan has a revenge game narrative after being let go by Pittsburgh in the off season after winning a pair of Stanley Cups. 

With all of that out there I just feel the over on 5.5 just makes the most sense for us to wager on tonight and for what its worth the Rangers/Penguins series last season totaled 25 goals over 4 games last season.

Goalie Of The Day: Igor Shesterkin - NYR

If you want to go with Sergei Bobrovsky against the Blackhawks you'll get no argument from me but I do think Shesterkin has the higher upside tonight. The Penguins will be a bad team but the offense will still generate shots and chances at good volume and if Shesterkin is up to snuff it could be a big game. 

Look for the rust to be there with all the goalies but trust the veterans tonight and especially the ones that are in line to get wins on this small slate. 

Player Of The Day: Sam Bennett - FLA

For the near and far future there will be no Barkov or Matthew Tkachuk in the lineup for the Panthers and that means its next man up in a big way for Sam Bennett. He will anchor the top line with Carter Verhaeghe and Brad Marchand and if you all remember this line was lethal in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last year. 

Poor Chicago has to watch the banner tonight and have Bennett and company destroy them, not a fun time for the Blackhawks!

Value Play Of The Day: Will Cuylle - NYR

This young man really emerged last season with 45 points and has drawn the attention of new coach Mike Sullivan as he's set to play on the top line for now! Playing with captain J.T. Miller and Mika Zibanejad can only mean good things for the youngster and it'll give him at least 16-17 minutes of ice time tonight, plenty of time to make his price a value in DFS! Look for this game to be higher scoring as well, like some Rangers tonight in general.
