NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today 9/30

 

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Philadelphia Flyers Prediction: Wednesday, September 30th

On the second day of the NHL season the schedule makers aren't holding back with a meeting of the Penguins vs. Flyers to start their seasons. Its a bitter rivalry that has not relented despite the changing names on the sweaters over the years. We know the Penguins can score goals but can they play defense, and where do the Flyers stand heading into 2026? Let's dive into those questions. 

Its now year 22 for Crosby, Malkin and Letang and while the continuity is something to behold the group lacks the two way play they once had. The blue line has not been improved much on the Pittsburgh end and goalie tandem of Arturs Silovs and Dan Vladar is untested. Due to this the Flyers have the leg up in the home opener tonight. 

Philadelphia returns much of the lineup that gave them a surprising postseason run last year under Rick Tocchet and it seems like Dan Vladar is ready to go in net. Vladar was sensational against the Pens in the playoffs last year with a 1.61 GAA and .937 SV%. Since we have no stats for this new season we have to lean on what we know right now and it seems like a Flyers win in the home opener is in order today.

Goalie of The Day - Dan Vladar - PHI

In this three game slate the Penguins have the lowest implied total for goals at 2.6 and as stated in the best bets portion Vladar was amazing in his playoff series against the Pens last season. Pittsburgh is a high volume shooting team usually so the ceiling is high for Vladar who is in line to pick up a win tonight. 

Player of The Day: Nathan MacKinnon - COL

The highest total on the slate tonight is in this Kings vs. Avalanche game and for good reason. The Colorado offense is one of the best if not the best in the sport and the Kings no longer have Anze Kopitar to combat team's top playmakers. If there is a multi-point night from anyone tonight, it will come from this man on his way to another 130+ point season. 

Value Play of The Day: Kyle Palmieri - NYI

The Islanders aren't the sexy team on any slate but with three game you must have some piece of this game. The Maple Leafs are on a back to back and have struggled on defense already this season allowing a fair amount of shots last night. Palmieri gives you exposure to the Islander top line and power play unit all in a price tag of 5.4k on DraftKings. 

Defenseman Play of the Day: Matthew Schaefer - NYI

More Islanders love here in the playbook but it doesn't take convincing to play this young stud. He had a rookie breakout campaign just last year and his minutes are only going to go up. He's not afraid to shot the puck which also helps, lock him in right now. 

 

Top Stack of the Day: Avalanche Line 1

The Avs have the highest implied goal total on the slate and most of that predictive scoring should come from the top line. MacKinnon is a super star, Martin Necas is a sleeper for 35-40 goals and Artturi Lehkonen is a sniper in his own right. This group may combine for a multi-goal night and I can't miss out on that with such a small slate of games.
