NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 4/18

 

Senators & Hurricanes Prediction 

This is series is going to be a headache for both teams I imagine and its because of their styles of play. Ottawa doesn't want to give teams an inch and their team is built to play defense first as reflected in their stats. The Senators grade out as the 2nd best defense in hockey this season at least when it comes to even strength play. They have an expected goals against mark of 2.12 which is rivaled only by Vegas and Philadelphia. The Hurricanes aren't far behind that number though at 2.31 while scoring 2.98 expected per game at even strength. Given those stats I don't entirely understand why the total is 6.5 goals, maybe because the books don't trust the Carolina goaltending but that aside I can't see 7 goals happening as these teams try to figure out how to maneuver in the series to start. The under is the play of the day for me here.

Goalie of The Day - Jesper Wallstedt - MIN

Well the Wild are doing it, throwing the rookie into the fire! Wallstedt has steady all year and deserves this opportunity but what a way to start your postseason career on the road in the big D. I will say this much the Stars offense sputtered down the stretch as they ranked 5th fewest in expected goals at even strength and that counts a lot in my models. I think the Wild win this series and hopefully it starts today in Game 1 with a win for the kid. 

Player of The Day: Sidney Crosby - PIT

Some call him Sid the Kid or the GOAT but I think of him as a Flyers killer. In 93 career games Crosby has roasted Philadelphia to the point where even if his name is mentioned the people in eastern PA will hiss. 139 points he's gathered in those 93 games and this is even more special for the Pittsburgh captain as its the playoffs at home for the first time in 3 seasons. Nothing will be held back, pray for the Flyers. 

Value Play of The Day: Porter Martone - PHI

I have been keeping my eye on the Flyers rookie lately and I can say I am impressed. Out of the college ranks and in his first 9 games he has 4 goals and 6 assists and that's big time for a 19 year old. The Penguins defense isn't great also as they allow the 4th most DFS points to right wingers on the season, could be a nice debut for the young man tonight.
