NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 3/3

 

Mammoth vs. Capitals Prediction 

Its a critical matchup between a pair of teams in the playoff chase tonight as the Mammoth travel to the nation's capital in D.C. Both teams are reliable on one side of the ice and that's defense and that's the play I intend to exploit to start my bets for the night. Over the past 10 games at even strength Utah has given up just 1.4 goals per game which is tied for the fewest in the NHL during that time span. They are coming off a shocking 4-0 loss to Chicago from over the weekend so I assume focus is fully back after a game like that and they'll get back to their stingy ways. On the home side the Capitals are middle of the pack in the league when it comes to goals against 5 on 5 at 2.1 over the past 10 but those numbers are spiked with a rotten backup goaltender in Charlie Lindgren. When Logan Thompson is in net its a different story as in his 2 starts back from the Olympics he has stopped 47 of 50 shots and each of those games when under easily. Washington has also gone under the total in 19 of 32 games this season so let's fade the 6.5 goals tonight and see if averages hold true.

Canadiens vs. Sharks Prediction 

A matchup of two surprising teams is set to be underway tonight as the Canadiens are firmly in a playoff spot and the Sharks are nipping at the heels of a wild card position! Both of these teams have been fun to watch this season and have racked up the goals but I see a mismatch on the ice tonight. The visiting Habs continue to light the lamp especially over the past 10 games where they are the 3rd highest scoring team at even strength with 2.7 goals a game. They've also played great defense in the same time frame allowing just 1.7 goals per game 5 on 5 and just 2.9 in all situations. This puts the young Sharks in a pickle as they only keep up in games by scoring but their defense is concerning as is the goaltender slated to start tonight in Yaroslav Askarov. In his two starts after the break he has allowed 7 goals on 52 shots which puts his SV% in the mid .800s, not great! This game is priced close to even but I think the road Habs who are 16-6-7 come out on top tonight as slight favorites.

Goalie of The Day - Casey DeSmith - DAL

Its not everyday you have a backup goaltender as your goalie play but DeSmith has been awesome for the Stars this season and the team is riding a 9 game win streak. In his 21 starts this season he has lost in regulation only 4 times and his 2.31 GAA is actually better than Oettingers on the season who is the starter. He will also go against the Flames tonight who just can't score goals no matter the matchup. Over their last 10 games the Flames have scored just 2.1 goals per game, the 2nd fewest in hockey, load up some DeSmith today folks. 

Player of The Day: Cale Makar - COL

There are a lot of great options today and some games that should see a lot of goals but the Avalanche star blue liner is in a perfect spot. In the 4 games after the Olympics Makar has 2 goals and 2 assists so far and has posted a couple of 20 point nights in DFS. Tonight he gets a Ducks team that allows the most DFS points to defenseman on the season and he will be on the ice 25+ minutes. Not even the most expensive option at the position either so its a slam dunk for Makar tonight for me. 

Value Play of The Day: Adam Fantilli - CBJ

This matchup for the Predators and Blue Jackets has the potential to be high scoring and I will be needing some pieces of it. Fantilli is a perfect piece at 5.6k on DraftKings as he won't break your bank but will play a major role in this game anchoring the top forward line. There is also a chance that Zach Werenski is out tonight so somebody will need to pick up the slack and with 3 straight games with a goal I think the centerman is in a perfect spot.
