🏒 NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 3/20

It may be a light five-game NHL slate to prepare us for huge 11-game action tomorrow, but that certainly doesn’t mean that there isn’t value to be had for some NHL expert picks. The action starts with what is a star-studded matchup on NHL Network with the Toronto Maple Leafs hosting the Carolina Hurricanes.

Even without Auston Matthews for the rest of the season, that game certainly provides opportunities for NHL best bets today. It’s also one that we’re going to pair with our NHL DFS cheat sheet predictions, and as for some other teams worth highlighting, both the New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche have big road games.

In other words, spots for us to watch some premier skaters in Jack Hughes and Nathan MacKinnon. Later on has Panthers vs. Flames, and with Florida depleted as well, there is plenty of intrigue there too. The nightcap is Ducks vs. Mammoth, and with the menu on deck, let’s get into where we’re going to focus our NHL best bets today.

🔥 Devils vs. Capitals Prediction: Under 6 Goals (-120 at Novig)

We’re going to start with the other early Eastern Conference clash, and the approach may or may not surprise you. On one hand, we’ve got two elite goal scorers on each side with Jack Hughes and Alex Ovechkin. Despite that, our NHL best bets today are starting by taking the under for the game.

In the previous two meetings between these Metro Division squads, we saw game totals of five and seven goals, so this one will likely be a sweat. However, since the Olympic break, both New Jersey and Washington rank in the top 10 in terms of goals allowed per game.

Admittedly, Hughes and company have been scoring more since then as well, but over the course of the entire season, they’ve still scored the sixth-fewest goals per game. That means we could see some regression, and with Washington scoring just 2.7/game since the break, we’re starting our NHL best bets today with under 6 goals (-120 at Novig).
 

 

 

🔥 Avalanche vs. Blackhawks Prediction: Colorado -1.5 Puck Line (-113 at Novig)

The Central Division-leading Avs just had to deal with Jake Oettinger and the Dallas Stars two nights ago, and the loss has them with just a two-point lead in the division now. To try and boost that, they now get to face the bottom of the Central in Chicago, hence the addition to our NHL best bets today.

The Blackhawks were just on the ice last night, and as promising a future as Connor Bedard has, they simply don’t have the depth to keep pace with Colorado. The Avs didn’t even play nearly up to their caliber versus Chicago a few weeks ago, yet they still escaped with a multi-goal victory.

Given that they have a +81 goal differential this year, that’s no shock (the next closest team is sitting at +51)! So, we’ll add to our NHL best bets today with Colorado -1.5 (-113 at Novig).

🏅 Skater of the Day: Andrei Svechnikov

We said that we’d be taking advantage of that opening Hurricanes vs. Maple Leafs game on NHL Network, and that’s thanks to Carolina being in a great spot. So, adding Svechnikov to our NHL DFS cheat sheet predictions is nothing shocking, but the matchup with Toronto is simply too great to ignore.

Svechnikov is a multi-point threat against any team alongside Aho, and the Leafs have had struggles with goaltending all year; they’ve allowed the fourth-most goals per game this year. Even though it’s Seth Jarvis who leads the team in shots, there should be enough for everyone, including Svechnikov, to get theirs.

With the Leafs allowed more shots per game than any team in the NHL (especially since the Olympic break), Svechnikov simply has to be part of our NHL DFS cheat sheet predictions for today.

🏅 Goalie of the Day: Logan Thompson

Given that last note, if you don’t trust Carolina to find the back of the net often enough, then you could actually consider Toronto’s netminder to be the goalie of the day with so many opportunities to rack up saves. That said, we’re looking elsewhere to add to our NHL DFS cheat sheet predictions for tonight.

That would be with Washington goaltender Logan Thompson, which correlates to the very first prediction that we shared with you. Of course, Jack Hughes presents an issue, but the Devils are still a way for goalies to rack up fantasy points. Since the Olympic break, only the Hurricanes have taken more shots per game.

So, even if Hughes is able to find the back of the net once or twice himself, Thompson can still have a big night for your lineups, hence the addition to our NHL DFS cheat sheet predictions.

🏅 Value Pick of the Day: John Tavares

This wouldn’t be considered a “deep sleeper” type of pick for a year-long draft comparison’s sake, but we still love the former Toronto captain. Many fans forget, or don’t even know, that he led the Leafs for six seasons prior to Auston Matthews, and with him injured, Tavares is part of our NHL DFS cheat sheet predictions.

William Nylander hasn’t been shooting the puck nearly as often as in the past few seasons, and with no Matthews, more responsibility is on Tavares to generate scoring opportunities. There’s no denying that Carolina isn’t the #1 opponent, but Toronto still has offensive talent despite what their overall record may suggest.

He has an opportunity to rival guys with salaries $2,000 more expensive than his, so we like John Tavares as part of our NHL DFS cheat sheet predictions.
