NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 3/17

 

Sharks vs. Oilers Prediction 

I believe it was said by Thanos first in the Avengers but dread it, run from it, Destiney arrives all the same and so do the over on game totals for the Oilers right now. Since the return from the Olympics, Edmonton has gone over the total in 7 of 10 games and are allowing the 3rd highest 5 on 5 goal rate per game at 2.7! They make up for it on the offensive end of course at 2.6 even strength goals per game which is 5th but either way they are living in a shootout game after game. The visiting Sharks defensive woes have been well documented this season as well as they've given up 3.6 goals per game over their last 10 in all situations. Then you add the narrative of Connor McDavid vs. Macklin Celebrini to the fold and you know the goals are going to flow like water tonight. Even with the odds juiced the over has to be the wager here from me as the Oilers have gone over at a rate of 40-26-2 on the season, more than any team in the NHL. 

Pick: Sharks & Oilers Over 6.5 Goals (-140 on DraftKings)

Islanders vs. Maple Leafs Prediction 

We are in the part of the season with the haves and the have nots and there is no more glaring example than the Islanders taking on the Maple Leafs tonight. New York has won 7 of their last 10 games and must maintain that pace with Columbus right behind them in the standings. The offense has picked up the slack lately with 2.32 expected goals per game at even strength cover for suboptimal goalie play from Ilya Sorokin. The goaltender will snap out of it soon I'm sure but good to have the offense to fall back on. On the Toronto side they have lost 8 of their last 10 and have given up 2.56 goals per game at even strength, the 5th most in the NHL during that time span. They are also under .500 on home ice this season at 17-18 straight up so give me the Islanders to win and keep pace in the eastern conference playoff race.

Today's NHL DFS Cheat Sheet & Stacks

Goalie of The Day - Filip Gustavsson - MIN

While I haven't enjoyed the play of Minnesota of late I do see this matchup against Chicago as a slump buster and also a great spot for our goalie tonight. In the last 10 games no team has scored fewer goals than the Blackhawks at 2.1 scored and that instantly puts Gus at the top of my list for goalies. If he can make his stops and not get sloppy a 18-20 shot shutout is fully in play and its going to be my lock in for tonight. 

Player of The Day: Connor McDavid - EDM

The player of the day can be McDavid or Celebrini its really your preference, I went with McDavid as he's at home and the Oilers defense has played slightly better in expected numbers of late. Sharks allow the 5th most DFS points to centers on the season and he has 18 points in the 10 games since the Olympic break, what's not to love? Eat the salary and make sure McDavid is in those lineups people. 

Value Play of The Day: Brayden Schenn - NYI

There are a few Islanders I like tonight but Schenn is for sure the most under the radar. The Maple Leafs allow the 3rd most DFS points to centers on the season and Schenn finds himself due for his first goal as an Islander I do believe tonight. At 3.7k this is a free square to me that also plays on the top powerplay unit, let's get that value!
