NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 3/12
Anaheim Ducks vs Toronto Maple Leafs Prediction
The Anaheim Ducks have faced challenges this season, but one thing they consistently do well is score goals. The Maple Leafs, on the other hand, have lost eight games in a row and appear ready to hit the golf course. While Anaheim isn't the strongest team on the road, getting them at -110 against a team that hasn't won since returning from the Olympic break is an appealing opportunity. It seems likely that the struggling team in Ontario will add another loss to their record.
- Anaheim Ducks Money Line (-110 on DraftKings Sportsbook)
Edmonton Oilers vs Dallas Stars Prediction
You don’t need a mathematics degree from Harvard University to see that this game is likely to be full of goals. Tristan Jarry is starting for Edmonton because Connor Ingram left last game due to injury, while the Stars are turning to Jake Oettinger, who has 26 wins this season but holds a .899 save percentage. Oettinger is reminiscent of modern-day Martin Jones—he wins games, but not necessarily because of his performance. This matchup also features two elite power plays going head-to-head, and with neither goalie instilling much confidence, we might see the total score go over before the end of the second period.
- Oilers/Stars OVER 6.5 (-125 on DraftKings Sportsbook)
Today's NHL DFS Cheat Sheet & Stacks
Goalie of the Day: Igor Shesterkin - NYR
I know this might not seem favorable at first, but hear me out. The Rangers have performed significantly better on the road, and Igor Shesterkin is a key factor in that improvement. It’s not his fault that the offense struggles to score goals. The Jets faced Anaheim a few nights ago and managed only 14 shots on goal—not a great performance by any measure. Winnipeg has been an underwhelming offensive team all year, which suggests we’re likely to see a low-scoring game. This situation gives our goalie a good chance to secure a win and prove his value. At a price of just $7,100, it’s an opportunity that’s too good to overlook.
Honourable Mention: Lukas Dostal - ANA
As of February 1st, Lukas Dostal has a 7-1 record and is set to face a Toronto team that struggles to generate offense. Although his performances have not always been flawless, he consistently gives his team a chance to win when he’s on the ice. Additionally, his price is quite appealing, making it important to find opportunities to maximize value if we want to afford some of the top skaters on the board. I have no reservations about using Dostal in a GPP (Guaranteed Prize Pool).
Player of the Day: David Pastrnak - BOS
On a large slate like this, it's important to target maximum value. This might mean passing on players like Nathan MacKinnon or Jack Eichel. Since David Pastrnak and his wife recently welcomed a baby, he could benefit from the unofficial “dad boost” for this game. The Sharks are known for their high-scoring offense but lack strong defense, which is favorable for Pastrnak. He is likely to have plenty of opportunities to take shots on goal and could score multiple times. He stands out as the top winger option on the slate, and his potential upside is significant.
Honourable Mention: Jack Hughes - NJ
The New Jersey Devils are up against a Calgary team that is playing its third game in as many nights, with the Flames just looking to finish out the season. Dustin Wolf has been confirmed as the starting goalie, and his struggles on the road are well documented: he has a 5-15-0 record and a save percentage of .882. While Jack Hughes doesn’t need much assistance, his matchup looks exceptionally promising on paper. As a volume shooter, he is expected to have numerous high-quality scoring opportunities. I anticipate he will finish the game with multiple points.
Value Play of the Day: Jake Walman - EDM
We aren’t focusing on Jake Walman's offensive skills tonight; instead, we're focusing on his defensive abilities. In the last two games, he has blocked a total of 11 shots, which is impressive for any defenseman. Although his ice time is still under 20 minutes, I expect Walman to have a busy night, especially with Edmonton on the road facing a Dallas team that can win in various ways. Our main goal is for him to achieve value, regardless of how he accomplishes it.
