NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 3/10

 

Islanders vs. Blues Prediction 

Hockey continues to be an odd sport and I say that because the Blues sold at the trade deadline and yet are riding a 4 game winning streak heading into tonight's game where they hosts the Islanders. I do think things flip a bit tonight but it seems the odds makers are giving St. Louis some respect as they are just narrow underdogs. I will counter that with the fact that the Islanders are a very good road team this season at 19-13-3 and the Eastern Conference is much better than the West. On the Blues side they are playing well with 3.6 goals per game over their last 10 but their expected number is just 2.7 so they are a bit over their skis right now. This is also a critical game for the Islanders as they try to lock in a playoff spot and the schedule gets tougher after tonight. There is also the narrative of an immediate revenge game for Brayden Schenn who was traded from the Blues just last week so give me the Islanders to win tonight in what should flip some trends around for both teams.

Red Wings vs. Panthers Prediction 

With as many high totals as we have on the slate this one may go under the radar and that's for good reason as it could be tough sledding for goals here tonight. The Red Wings have planted themselves as a defense first team for a while now and with the loss of Dylan Larkin they aren't scoring much either. Over their past 10 games the Red Wings have allowed just 1.9 even strength goals per game and they've scored only 1 goal per game. This has led to them going under the game total in 4 of 6 games since the Olympic break. The Panthers are in a similar boat as they are set to miss the playoffs as back to back Stanley Cup Champions. They've scored just 1 goals per game 5 on 5 just like Detroit and while their defense is worse with 2.3 goals allowed I don't expect the Red Wings to press that advantage tonight. The total is 6 goals on some books and that's just too high so let's fade that and take the under.

Goalie of The Day - Jeremy Swayman - BOS

The Bruins aren't an impressive team by any metrics but one thing is for sure, they are in the playoff hunt because of their goaltending. Over each goaltenders last 10 games Swayman grades out 2nd best when it comes to goals saved above expected at 8.9. His .916 SV% is also impressive as he looks to stop a Kings team that has had its issues scoring since the Olympic break with just 1.9 goals per game at even strength. Swayman is at home too where he has been excellent with a record of 15-4-1, seems like a must start to me. 

Player of The Day: Nathan MacKinnon - COL

How could I say no to this game? MacKinnon vs. Connor McDavid is appointment television and I need a big piece of this matchup. The Oilers are trash on defense as the world knows and MacKinnon will be licking his chops against an Oilers team that allows the 3rd most DFS points per game to centers on the season. If this game doesn't feature 10 or more goals I will be sad, let's see a slug fest!

Value Play of The Day: Juraj Slafkovsky - MON

Back again with some love for the young winger in Montreal! He is coming off a game where he netted a pair of goals and will now play a Maple Leafs team that has given up on their season and it shows. Toronto allows the 4th most DFS points to right wingers on the season and at 5.7k Slafkovksy is a bargain in today mammoth slate of star power.
