NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 2/3

 

Maple Leafs vs. Oilers Prediction 

The Maple Leafs continue their western conference road trip tonight and tonight will find them visiting the Oilers! The Leafs have won both games so far on the trip but this will be the toughest test yet and I don't like the spot for them. They have not been a good home team this season at 10-15 straight up and they've allowed 3 goals per game at even strength over the past 10 games. On the flip side the Oilers have played well at home especially lately winning 3 of their last 4 while scoring 20 total goals in those 4 games. That kind of scoring will continue tonight and while I worry about the Edmonton defense I think the offense carries the day here and the Oilers win in regulation and we take better odds than the current juiced up Money Line. 

Pick: Oilers 60-Min Money Line (-125 on DraftKings)

Penguins vs. Islanders Prediction 

This is going to be a big time statement game in the Metropolitan Division tonight as the teams tied for second in their group go head to head on Long Island. Both teams have rode defense into their recent successes as the Islanders have given up just 1.8 goals per game at even strength but have also struggled on offense with just 1.5 goals scored. On the Penguins side goal scoring hasn't been an issue overall but they will be on a back to back schedule on the road and that can slow things down. The Pittsburgh defense has also been great allowing just 2.5 goals per game over their last 10 contests. The goaltending should also be very good as Stuart Skinner and Ilya Sorokin had last night off and are in excellent form over the past month so give me the under in this huge divisional clash.

Goalie of The Day - Stuart Skinner - PIT

If you wanted to pick Sorokin on the other side of this matchup I would roll with it too but this is a weird slate of goaltenders in front of us. I am choosing to lean into that tonight as Skinner represents an unpopular option with loads of upside considering the Islanders have scored less than 2.5 goals per game over their last 10 contests. Skinner was also 7-1-0 in the month of January with a 2.13 GAA and .910 SV%, not too shabby for a goaltender of the day so let's lock him in. 

Player of The Day: Connor McDavid - EDM

Every playbook I try to find a way to maybe fade McDavid and be different but I just can't tonight in this matchup with Toronto. Chris Morais would say the Maple Leafs need to relegated and I can see why as they have given up 4.3 goals per game over their last 10 which is 2nd in the NHL and they are allowing the 5th most DFS points per game to centers on the season as a whole. Don't get too cute tonight and spend up to lock down McDavid. 

Value Play of The Day: Tampa Bay Centers

I don't think I have ever just picked an entire positional group but with Anthony Cirelli day to day I am not sure who is going to center the line between Hagel and Kucherov. Who ever that is will be the value play of the week between Yanni Gourde, Dominic James or Nick Paul. Closer to slate lock we will know who that is but since I am writing early I don't know yet so plug in a Tampa Bay center and wait to find out!
