NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 12/31
St. Louis Blues vs Colorado Avalanche Prediction
Watching the Colorado Avalanche this season has been nothing short of remarkable. They have an impressive record of 16-0-2 at home and are currently the best team in the league in both offensive and defensive categories. Nathan MacKinnon continues to meet expectations with his performance. On the other hand, the St. Louis Blues are not a strong team overall; even if they manage to contain Colorado's offense, they only average 2.50 goals per game, which is not nearly enough to compete with the Avalanche. There's every reason to believe that the best team in hockey will cover the Puck Line.
Boston Bruins vs Edmonton Oilers Prediction
One important lesson I've learned from playing NHL DFS is not to bet against Connor McDavid. Although he didn't start the season well, he has been the best player over the past six weeks. He’s accumulating points and taking plenty of shots. In their last game, Edmonton needed a miracle to defeat the Jets, but I expect them to perform much better against a Bruins team that has lost six consecutive games. Boston is currently the most penalized team in the league, while the Oilers boast the best power play. If the game gets out of hand, McDavid and his teammates will capitalize on any opportunities.

Today's NHL DFS Cheat Sheet & Stacks
Goalie of the Day: MacKenzie Blackwood - COL
It has become essential to start MacKenzie Blackwood when he plays at home. The veteran goaltender has an impressive 6-0-0 record, with a 1.65 goals-against average (GAA) and a .931 save percentage (SV%) in front of his home crowd. His upcoming matchup against St. Louis looks promising. If you're looking to maximize your chances of winning in cash games, this is the best strategy.
Honourable Mention: Dustin Wolf - CGY
Dustin Wolf’s overall performance this season has been average, but he shines when playing at home. He boasts a record of 9 wins, 4 losses, and 2 overtime losses, along with an impressive 2.00 goals against average (GAA) and a .928 save percentage (SV%). These numbers are exceptional for a goalie. Although the Flames have been struggling to score, they are up against a Flyers team that will be playing their second game in as many nights. Given these factors, I feel confident taking a chance on Wolf in a GPP (Guaranteed Prize Pool).
Player of the Day: Nathan MacKinnon - COL
Currently, there is no player on DraftKings averaging over 21 fantasy points per game, except for Nathan MacKinnon. He is unstoppable, much like his team when playing at home. MacKinnon has a high shot volume, scores goals frequently, and is equally skilled at providing assists. When he is available on the slate, he simply cannot be overlooked. His price tag of $10,100 may seem high, but it offers good value considering his production.
Honourable Mention: Connor McDavid - EDM
If you’re looking for an alternative option, Connor McDavid is a name to keep in mind. He has been electrifying over the past few weeks, consistently accumulating shots and points. The Bruins are in town, and they lead the league in penalties. Which team has the best power play? That’s right, it’s the Oilers. With Boston expected to take penalties, this will create high-quality scoring opportunities for McDavid and the team. He could be in for a huge night.
Value Play of the Day: Colton Parayko - STL
With so many high-priced players to choose from, we need to identify some budget options that can provide value. Colton Parayko may not be known for his offensive skills, but he plays significant minutes and excels at blocking shots. I anticipate that Colorado will control the game and generate at least 60 shot attempts. This creates a great opportunity for Parayko to deliver value without necessarily needing to register a point.
