NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 12/17

Winnipeg Jets vs St. Louis Blues Prediction

As long as the St. Louis Blues continue to give Joel Hofer starts at home, I will be betting against him. He has a 3.75 goals-against average (GAA) and an .864 save percentage (SV%) when playing on home ice, yet Jim Montgomery keeps putting him in net. While the Jets are a solid team, they’re not at the same level as they were last year. However, if I have to choose between trusting Connor Hellebuyck and Hofer, I would definitely pick Hellebuyck. I believe we can find some value and bet on the Jets to win in regulation.

Goalie of the Day: Connor Hellebuyck - WPG

It's surprising that Connor Hellebuyck isn't the most expensive goalie on tonight's slate. He's a world-class goalie with a .910 save percentage on the road, and he costs under $8,000. If we're getting such a great deal, we should take advantage of it. There may be other goalies with better matchups tonight, but I’m choosing to trust Hellebuyck's talent.

Honourable Mention: Carter Hart - VGK

When considering goalies with favorable matchups, Carter Hart is set to face the Devils. Although his return to action hasn't been stellar, that's to be expected given the amount of time he missed. While the Golden Knights may be sidelined with illness affecting some key players, it doesn't change the fact that New Jersey is currently struggling and continues to concede too many goals. Hart may come with a high price tag, but if you're simply looking for a win, his chances are looking pretty good.

Player of the Day: Tomas Hertl - VGK

Sticking with the Golden Knights, Jack Eichel will be out tonight due to illness, which means Tomas Hertl is likely to see an increase in ice time. He has a favorable matchup and is priced at just $5,600 on DraftKings, making him a great value for a player with significant upside. Although he may be a popular choice, we shouldn't let his anticipated high ownership deter us from considering him.

Honourable Mention: Roman Josi - NSH

This matchup presents a challenge for Roman Josi and the Nashville Predators, but there are opportunities to seize. The Hurricanes lead the league in shots on goal when playing on the road. While the Predators have been showing improvement lately, they still risk being outshot. Josi has the ability to generate offense and is also exceptional at blocking shots. In summary, he can provide value in multiple ways, which is exactly what we expect from the veteran defenseman.

Value Play of the Day: Brett Howden - VGK

Are you starting to see the pattern? I'm feeling confident about the Golden Knights tonight, and there's a good reason for it. Brett Howden will be stepping into Eichel's spot on the top line, so he’s definitely a player to consider. He's priced at just $3,000, although he won't be getting any power-play time. His potential may be limited, but at that price, even if he doesn't contribute much, it allows us to allocate our budget more effectively elsewhere.
