NHL Best Bets & DFS Cheat Sheet, 10/9: Picks, Predictions & Player Props
Published: Oct 09, 2025
Welcome to the opening week of the NHL season! If you’re like me, this is what you’ve been waiting for. The Fantasy Alarm is your one-stop shop for everything NHL DFS. I’ll be here all year helping you build those perfect lineups, and sprinkle in some bets to keep the excitement going in the event your DFS lineup is toast by 8 PM ET.
For the NHL Bets, we are going to start off very slowly. It’s a new year, and things around the league are going to be different. We don’t have stats yet to work with, so most recommendations are going to be educated guesses. Don’t blow your (bankroll) load in the first week of action. We got a whole year together, so let’s get to work.

NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 10/09
Vegas Golden Knights vs. San Jose Sharks
The Vegas Golden Knights are playing their second game in as many nights, and they didn’t inspire any confidence with their lacklustre performance. They gave up 5 goals to a Kings team that was playing their second game of the season. Last season, the Golden Knights didn’t have a ton of success. Does that change this year? Maybe, but I’ll give the San Jose Sharks some love here tonight. I think they can keep this game close and, potentially, come away with the win.
- San Jose Sharks Moneyline (+170 on DraftKings)

New York Islanders vs. Pittsburgh PenguinsÂ
The Pittsburgh Penguins came away with a 3-0 victory on opening night, but let one performance fool you. Arturs Silovs was elite in that game, and the Rangers just couldn’t generate any offence. Now, Pittsburgh is on home ice, and Tristan Jarry is going to get the start. The veteran netminder finished last season with a 3.12 GAA and a .892 SV%. He also spent some time in the AHL. I don’t trust him at all, so even if the Islanders aren’t an elite offence and their special teams may still be a mess, there’s enough upside to trust them to get the job done.
- New York Islanders Moneyline (+170 on DraftKings)

Today's NHL DFS Cheat Sheet & Stacks
Goalie of The Day: Thatcher Demko - VAN
I know it’s a choice to pay up for the most expensive goalie on the slate, but Thatcher Demko is worth it. The Flames are coming off a 4-3 SO victory over Edmonton, and while the win was nice, the Oilers had a 3-0 lead and just couldn’t close it out. Dustin Wolf also kept that game very close. The Canucks are going to struggle this season, but for one night, I think they can handle Calgary’s below-average offence, which is good news for Demko.
Honourable Mention: Jet Greaves - CBJ
Columbus has elected to give Jet Greaves the start tonight, and I can’t help but be drawn to him. Nashville was elite on home ice, generating shots at a top-10 rate, but it didn’t translate to goals. Columbus struggled on the road, so there is some risk here. I like Greaves’ price tag and his low ownership. In a GPP, he’s my top option.
Player of The Day: David Pastrnak - BOS
The Bruins are going to run David Pastrnak and that top line into the ground. They were very good yesterday against Washington, and now they have a date with Chicago. The Blackhawks aren’t a much better team than last year, meaning they are going to really struggle on the road. Pastrnak has just two shots on goal, but he finished with 3 points and hit value without breaking a sweat. His matchup is by far the best on the slate.
Value Play of The Day: Mackie Samoskevich - FLA
The Florida Panthers put together a very nice performance against the Chicago Blackhawks a couple of nights ago, and I expect that trend to continue into this game. We know they are without some key players, so others are going to have to step up. Mackie Samoskevich finished with two assists on Wednesday and continues to see time on the second power play unit. He’s $3300 on DK, so one assist and a couple of shots on goal are all he needs to hit value, which is well within his reach.
Value Play of The Day: Emil Heineman - NYI
Emil Heineman was part of the trade that sent Noah Dobson to Montreal, and the Islanders are going to give him a chance to contribute right out of the gate. He is expected to skate on the top line with Jonathan Drouin and Bo Horvat, and center the second power play unit. Heinemen is a player who works hard and goes into the corners. He’s also got quite the shot. He can score goals; he just needs a chance to do it regularly. As mentioned earlier, Jarry is in the net, so the Islanders could, without breaking a sweat, score a decent amount. The kid at $2700 is a bargain on DK.
