This is will be the final week of the hockey season unit slow roll as we approach a ten game sample size for these teams. That means next week we are betting full units baby! NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today 10/20

San Jose Sharks vs. Montreal Canadiens: Tuesday, October 20th

As I continue to say, the season is just getting started and sample sizes are small but man do the Sharks look bad right now. Tonight they will be less than 24 hours removed from a 3-1 loss to the Maple Leafs and now they'll play a rested Canadiens team that can really score goals. How does this one shake out for betting though? Let's dive into the matchup.

The Sharks are 2-2-1 on the road this season, not terrible but the lack of scoring is troubling. In the five games they've managed just 11 total goals and this Habs team is a stingy one at even strength. On the season Montreal is allowing only 2.26 expected goals playing five on five hockey which is in the top third of the league. Add on top of that they've scored three goals a game at home this season you start to see the mismatch here. 

Of course given these trends the Habs to simply win is too chalky to swallow but taking them to win outright in regulation is a great value for us at -125 over at DraftKings. Let's go ahead and take that wager and not worry about covering a Puck Line. 

  • Pick: Canadiens 60-Min Money Line (-125 on DraftKings) Half-Unit Play

Los Angeles Kings vs. Washington Capitals: Tuesday, October 20th

Its another west coast team across the country for our best bets article here today and this one is quite the mismatch as well! The Kings have yet to win a game this season at 0-4-2 and the Capitals have taken care of business on home ice with a 4-1-0 record. 

By the numbers this Kings team is less than impressive right now posting just 2.05 expected goals per game at even strength but credit to them they are allowing just 1.84 on the defensive side. This means the Kings can only play one way though and it won't jive with this Capitals run and gun approach. 

Washington ranks 7th best in the NHL currently with 2.78 goals expected at even strength and overall they are scoring 3.5 goals per game. If Logan Thompson starts tonight for them its another bonus as he's been fantastic again in the net this season. His 5.5 goals saved above expected mark is 6th best in the league while he's given up just 16 goals in 6 starts. 

I will go ahead and pitch the Capitals on the Money Line tonight as the regulation and puck line options could be a little shakier given the Kings good defense. Make no mistake though, this is a game that Washington should absolutely win.

Today's NHL DFS Cheat Sheet & Stacks

Goalie of The Day: Pyotr Kochetkov, CAR

When playing the Canucks there's a pretty good chance you'll have a great game and the same goes for goalies. Kochetkov is undefeated in five games this season with a 1.78 GAA, Vancouver is not going to stand in the way of those stats. This is the without a doubt play of the day at goaltender for your lineups. 

Player of The Day: Alex DeBrincat, DET

There are plenty top tier options today but the Red Wings taking on the Kraken has huge potential for slate breaking scoring. Seattle is allowing the 3rd most DFS points per game to left wingers on the season and DeBrincat has over a point per game this season, seems like a fantastic spot here. 

Value Play of The Day: Logan Stankoven, CAR

Some more Hurricanes love in the playbook here as all of their pieces aren't expensive and the matchup is juicy. Stankoven has been up and down this season but he does have four goals so far and the Canucks allowing the 2nd most DFS points to centers on the season. At 6.1k its a play worth plugging in and saving some money from the high priced options. 

Defenseman Play of the Day: Cale Makar, COL

Makar is getting some love again today after he let us down but fear not he's a man that won't be held down for long! The Devils allow the MOST DFS points per game to blue liners this season and Makar averages over a point per game and 3 shots. He is primed here tonight. 

Top Stack of the Day: Canadiens Forward Line 1

Fading the Sharks again today and its usually a fruitful venture as I picked Matthews line last night and he had a three point game against them. The group of Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky is an elite one and against a tired Sharks team on back to back games its easy to stack these guys up and watch the lamp light up.
