NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 1/8

 

Canucks vs. Red Wings Prediction 

Detroit may not be in first place anymore in the Atlantic Division but they're still playing good hockey and have won 6 of their last 10 games. They are playing a lot of their games tight over that stretch with 2.9 goals scored at 3 goals against but overall on the season they are 14-8-1 on home ice while scoring 3.1 goals per game. That may not seem like much but it is an edge over the visiting Canucks who are already in selling mode this season as they reside dead last in the Pacific Division. They are losers of 4 straight coming into tonight as well and with the lack of goaltending going on I like the Wings tonight to prevail at home in what should be much more chalky. 

Pick: Red Wings Money Line (-145 on DraftKings)

Devils vs. Penguins Prediction 

As things stand in early January the Devils have completely fallen off a cliff and that's not a new trend for them in the 2nd half of seasons. They are on the heels of a 9-0 loss to the Islanders on Tuesday and that puts them at 30 goals allowed over the past 10 games while scoring just 16! The 1.6 goals per game in by far the fewest in the NHL during that span and the Penguins offense should be licking its chops. Pittsburgh is averaging 3.5 goals per game and have won 5 straight games to put themselves back in the playoff race and Evgeni Malkin could be back tonight after a stint on the IR. Everything is pointing Pens tonight and the value on their Money Line is well worth your while.

Goalie of The Day - Stuart Skinner - PIT

Before you all start throwing tomatoes at me here, let's break it down. I already wrote about the woes of the Devils offense in the best bets, they can't get anything going. Skinner benefits from that greatly in a positive game script but also because he's a streaky goaltender. He's hot right now with just 2 goals allowed in the last 2 games and collected 38 saves on 40 shots! He likely won't be a popular play either so if were right on this we get a leg up on the field and that could be huge in our contests. 

Player of The Day: Seth Jarvis - CAR

In my mind the Hurricanes offense is in the best spot for tonight's slate as this Ducks team has given up 50 goals over their last 10 games. Jarvis is the leading goal scorer for this team and has 5 points over his last 3 games on top of that. The Ducks allow the 7th most DFS points to right wingers on the season as well so fire up some Jarvis and Carolina forwards in general tonight. 

Value Play of The Day: Mathew Barzal - NYI

Barzal is as erratic with scoring production as they come but with Bo Horvat out of the lineup he has been thrust into a much larger role. Over the past couple of games he has taken advantage of that with 5 points and 6 shots on goal and tonight against Nashville is a plus matchup for the whole team. 3.4 expected goals against is where the Predators stand on defense the last 10 games so if that holds Barzal should make up his salary of 5.9k over on DraftKings.
