NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 1/7

Calgary Flames vs Montreal Canadiens Prediction

The Calgary Flames are making their only trip to Montreal to face the Canadiens. Unfortunately, Calgary has been a below-average team on the road and struggles to score goals. Dustin Wolf, in particular, has a 3.97 goals-against average (GAA) while playing away from the Saddledome, which is difficult to understand. While he might surprise us with a strong performance, I’m leaning towards backing the Montreal Canadiens and their offense. Although they have faced challenges at home this season, this could be a great opportunity for them to secure a victory against a weaker opponent.

Goalie of the Day: Jacob Fowler - MTL

Jacob Fowler is in an excellent position, and I stand by that belief. Though he has played only two home games as a rookie, he has posted impressive numbers, with a 1.52 goals-against average (GAA) and a .941 save percentage (SV%). While this is a small sample size, it still holds significance. The Canadiens have had difficulties with their defence and are struggling at home, but the Calgary Flames' road performance has been worse, and their offence lacks firepower. I don’t anticipate a high-scoring game between these two teams, but I do expect Fowler to deliver value.

Honourable Mention: Logan Thompson - WSH

Playing against the Dallas Stars might seem daunting, but they are currently on a six-game losing streak and have shown no signs of improvement. Logan Thompson has performed exceptionally well this season, particularly in home games. If you're willing to take the risk, it could potentially yield great rewards.

Player of the Day: Macklin Celebrini - SJ

This is a challenging matchup for the San Jose Sharks. They are coming off a back-to-back game and will be facing Darcy Kuemper, who has performed exceptionally well all season. The Kings have struggled at home, which presents an opportunity for the Sharks to capitalize. Elite players don’t typically worry about their matchups; they simply go out and perform. Macklin Celebrini is an elite player and doesn’t need an easy matchup to deliver results. I expect the Sharks to play catch-up early in the game, so Celebrini should get plenty of ice time, which should help him realize his potential value.

Honourable Mention: Dylan Guenther - UTA

The main issue for the Ottawa Senators this season has been goaltending. With Linus Ullmark away from the team for personal reasons, Leevi Merilainen has stepped into the starting role, but it hasn’t been successful. Although he has secured some wins, they have not resulted from his performance. The Senators are a strong team on the road, but they tend to give up scoring opportunities. Dylan Guenther has better statistics away from home, but we’ll make an exception for him in this matchup. He is a high-volume shooter who consistently finds the back of the net.

Value Play of the Day: Justin Sourdif - WSH

I have to admit—I didn’t know who Justin Sourdif was until a few days ago. He recently scored five points against Anaheim, which included his first career NHL hat trick. Currently, he is averaging 18 points per game and is centring the second line. Most of his production has occurred at home, which is favourable for him. Given the way the Stars have been playing lately, I like his chances of delivering strong value.
