NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 3/5

Oilers vs. Bruins Prediction

What happens when you get two of the best defensive teams together for a prime-time matchup? I very long look at the game total of course and that's exactly where I am heading in this one as Boston have given up just 2.58 goals per game on home ice this season and the Oilers on the road over the past 45 days are scoring just 3 goals per game on the road.

They've slipped a bit on defense allowing 3 goals per game on the road in the same time period, but the Oilers will get Boston on the second night of a back-to-back tonight and that is worth noting. The Boston offense since the All-Star break has also scored just 2.79 goals per game and being tired won't help their cause in goal scoring against Stuart Skinner the starting goaltender for the Oilers with his 2.64 GAA.

Linus Ullmark will get the start for Boston presumably and while he's the worse of the two guys in net he is a great option and is 10th in the NHL in goals saved above expected amongst qualified goaltenders. The total of 6.5 goals tonight is just a bit much so catch me on the under for this game tonight.

  • Pick: Oilers & Bruins Under 6.5 Goals (-125 on Caesars)

Canadiens vs. Predators Prediction

Whenever you start peeking into a matchup that features the Canadiens you look at it from many angles, player props, DFS stacking and of course betting on the over in goals in some fashion. I don't mean to pick on the Habs but defensively they're just so bad and over the past 45 days on the road they've allowed a massive 4.6 goals per game!

That's a mammoth of a number and I also see that Jake Allen will be starting tonight for Montreal and it makes attacking them so much easier. Allen has a 3.68 GAA in 20 games played this season and have a -3.2 goals saved above expected mark, just awful. That means the Predators offense is in play big time and their team total sitting at just 3.5 is a great number.

The Preds have averaged 3.4 goals per game at home in the last 45 days and the group is clicking well overall scoring 4 or more goals in 8 straight games heading into tonight. Not overthinking this one, give me the Nashville offense to shine.

Stars vs. Sharks Prediction

The Stars and Sharks are squaring off again tonight after a matchup on Saturday that went the distance that ended in a Stars shootout win. Now they run it back, but this time is different because the Sharks are rolling out a dreadful goaltender and the game total has been lowered on many books.

I am of course talking about Kaapo Kahkonen who has allowed 24 total goals over his last 6 starts and will now face one of the best offenses in the NHL. It's a big-time mismatch and one that could net the Stars 5+ goals and it wouldn't shock me one bit. The one holdup with betting the over in this game is the San Jose offense which is below average but at home it's a bit better scoring 2.6 goals per game over the past 45 days.

If they can score 2 goals, then the under is in big trouble and for all that is great about the Stars, they can forget to play defense allowing 3 goals per game on the road. Give me the over on the total as long as it stays at 6 even that's a great value for tonight.
