NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 3/12

Red Wings vs. Sabres Prediction

We all like to think of hockey as a team game but sometimes there are certain players that just change everything, and Dylan Larkin is that guy for the Red Wings. Since he has been out of the lineup the Wings have scored just 8 goals over the 5 games losing streak they find themselves on and now they head to one of the stingiest home teams in the NHL.

The Sabres are the best team in the NHL when it comes to hitting under the total at home as they are 20-12 to that side of things. More recently they have allowed just 2.7 goals per game on home ice over the past 45 days and their top option in the net will go tonight in Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. The goaltender holds a 2.42 GAA on the season and has given up just 30 goals over his last 14 starts.

Assuming the Sabres offense doesn't explode, and they rarely do with 3 goals scored per game over the past 45 days at home then this matchup seems destined to be an under and it'll be on my betting slip tonight.

Penguins vs. Senators Prediction

The genie is out of the bottle in Pittsburgh and it's not a good genie. The Penguins have completely given up on the season after the Jake Guentzel trade and it's getting really ugly as they've given up 15 goals over the past 3 games and it's hard to see anything getting turned around at the moment. They've also struggled to score lately but I think the offense may perk up against a Senators team that is a defense optionally team.

The Senators have allowed 3.8 goals per game over the last 45 days and as a whole this season they have gone over their game totals at a record of 33-26-1. This matchup sets them up to go over once again too as the offense at home is actually good with 3.6 goals scored per game in the past 45 days.

Then there's the goaltending which for each side has been a low point of late between Tristan Jarry (2.71 GAA) and Joonas Korpisalo (3.39 GAA) so expect the offensive playmakers to shine tonight and this one to push past the game total to the over.

Sharks vs. Flyers Prediction

Writing about how the Penguins are terrible and the Flyers on the upswing makes my Western PA stomach sick but it's all about making money and not letting emotions get in the way. The Flyers are in a massive spot tonight as they host the Sharks, and the books know it as the Money Line has pushed past -300 at this point.

Philly has lost 6 of their last 10 games but play good hockey on home ice and they'll host a San Jose team that has scored just 2.6 goals per game on the road over the past 45 days. I expect the Sharks to struggle to score again as the Flyers are allowing 2.5 goals per game in the same period and will surely dominated possession due to their superior Corsi metrics.

The Sharks are also sending out Magnus Chrona it looks like, and he's been beat up since coming up to the NHL with a 4.58 GAA and it's hard to imagine him turning that around against a crowd like Philly and a team like the Flyers. The Sharks are an awful road team, the Flyers need to win to keep up in the playoff race, it's as simple as that so let's ride the home side on the Puck Line for tonight.
