Welcome to Week 5 of the 2026 NFL season. Thursday Night Football brings a compelling NFC matchup to Dallas as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers visit the Cowboys. Tampa Bay enters the game looking to bounce back from a narrow 17-14 loss to Green Bay, while Dallas comes in riding the momentum of a 34-30 road victory over Houston. The Cowboys will host the Buccaneers on Thursday.

This article breaks down the key DFS plays, potential values, game-script considerations, and players to approach with caution as we look for the best ways to build competitive lineups for Thursday night.

Buccaneers vs. Cowboys DFS Picks & Preview: Thursday Night Football, 10/8

The biggest storyline is whether Tampa Bay's defense can slow down a Dallas offense that has shown the ability to produce points in bunches. The Cowboys' 34-point performance against Houston highlighted their offensive firepower, but allowing 30 points also underscored a potential vulnerability. Tampa Bay will need to create pressure, limit explosive plays, and force Dallas into long, difficult drives rather than allowing the Cowboys to dictate the tempo.

For the Buccaneers, the offensive challenge will be equally important. Tampa Bay managed just 14 points against Green Bay, and a more productive performance will likely be necessary on the road. The Bucs need to establish enough balance to keep Dallas from teeing off on obvious passing situations, while also making the most of scoring opportunities in the red zone.

Dallas has the advantage of playing at home, but Tampa Bay should not be dismissed after a competitive start to the season. The Cowboys' ability to protect the football and finish drives could prove decisive, while the Buccaneers' defensive discipline will be tested against an offense capable of turning small mistakes into big gains.

Buccaneers vs. Cowboys Injuries: Thursday Night Football Week 5

The Buccaneers enter Thursday night's matchup significantly shorthanded, with four players ruled out. Quarterback Baker Mayfield remains sidelined with a right thumb injury, meaning Tampa Bay will turn to Jalon Daniels for his second consecutive start. The Bucs will also be without starting safety Antoine Winfield, who is dealing with a rib injury and is expected to miss multiple weeks, along with cornerback Benjamin Morrison (quad) and linebacker SirVocea Dennis (ankle/foot).

Dallas has fewer major absences, but its depth will still be tested. The Cowboys ruled out cornerback Cobie Durant, linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and offensive tackle Drew Shelton, all with hamstring injuries. All-Pro guard Tyler Smith is listed as questionable after returning to practice from thumb surgery, while wide receiver Jonathan Mingo is also questionable with an illness.

NFL Thursday Night Football DFS Picks: MVP/Captain

CeeDee Lamb, WR, Dallas Cowboys - DraftKings: $11,800 | FanDuel: $12,600

Lamb enters Week 5 with an absurd 37 catches for 498 yards and four touchdowns. Last week he went off for a 17-catch, 189-yard, game-winning-TD explosion in his best game of the season. Dallas is clearly treating him as its No. 1 option again, and his 21 targets against Houston demonstrate just how massive his role has become.

He is rightfully garnering the most ownership in the top lineup spot as he clearly has the highest ceiling on the single-game/showdown slate.

Dak Prescott, QB, Dallas Cowboys – DraftKings: $10,800 | FanDuel: $11,800

Prescott comes in with 1,065 passing yards, eight touchdowns and just one interception through four games, while Dallas averages the second-most points in the NFL at 30.5 per game.

Tampa Bay has been excellent overall defensively, ranking fourth in total defense and ninth against the pass, but the Bucs have generated very little pressure. That matters for Dak because he has been particularly efficient when given a clean pocket, and Tampa Bay's secondary is also missing two starters.

Javonte Williams, RB, Dallas Cowboys - DraftKings: $10,400 | FanDuel: $10,400

Williams is coming off a three-touchdown performance against Houston and has scored six total touchdowns through four games. More importantly, he's handling 66% of Dallas' rushing attempts and has received 18 of the Cowboys' 25 red-zone rushing attempts, giving him an excellent path to another touchdown.

The concern is Tampa Bay's run defense. The Bucs have allowed 78.5 rushing yards per game, third-fewest in the NFL, and haven't surrendered a 100-yard rushing performance this season. Williams is also averaging only 3.7 yards per carry, so his fantasy value is heavily tied to volume and scoring opportunities.

Jalon Daniels, QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers – DraftKings: $8,600 | FanDuel: $10,800

The undrafted rookie struggled in his first NFL start against Green Bay, completing 19-of-27 passes for 148 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, but he added 55 rushing yards on eight carries. That rushing ability is the biggest reason to consider him a primary option.

The Cowboys have allowed the most rushing yards to opposing quarterbacks (188) through four games, while also giving up a 71.7% completion rate and a league-high 9 passing touchdowns. Dallas has generated only four sacks and has yet to record an interception, giving Daniels a legitimate opportunity to outperform his modest Week 4 performance.

NFL Thursday Night Football DFS Picks: Core Plays

George Pickens, RB, Dallas Cowboys – DraftKings: $8,800 | FanDuel: $9,600

Pickens' production has been underwhelming thus far, posting 18 catches for 225 yards and no touchdowns through four games. But the underlying role remains encouraging, as he's played at least 76% of the snaps in each game and has 27 targets on the season.

Lamb has reclaimed the clear alpha receiver role and received 21 targets last week, leaving Pickens with just three despite Dallas throwing 45 passes. Pickens also has the downfield ability to turn a modest target total into a big fantasy performance.

Bucky Irving, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers – DraftKings: $8,400 | FanDuel: $11,200

Irving carried the ball 16 times for 61 yards last week, and the Cowboys have been one of the league's more vulnerable run defenses, allowing 150.3 rushing yards per game. That gives Irving a good opportunity to rebound from his inefficient Week 4 performance.

The biggest concern is the passing-game workload. Irving had 15 targets over Tampa Bay's first three games but wasn't targeted at all against Green Bay, while rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels added 55 rushing yards himself. With Daniels making his second career start, Tampa Bay could lean heavily on Irving on the ground, but his receiving floor is less certain with Daniels under center.

Emeka Egbuka, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers – DraftKings: $8,200 | FanDuel: $8,600

Through four games, Egbuka has 15 catches for 154 yards and one touchdown on 24 targets, and his 19.8% target share ranks 29th among wide receivers.

Dallas just allowed Houston's receivers to combine for 16 catches, 285 yards and two touchdowns, and the Cowboys rank 29th in fantasy points allowed per target to wide receivers.

The primary concern is Tampa Bay's quarterback situation. Baker Mayfield remains out with a thumb injury, leaving Daniels to make his second career start. The undrafted rookie targeted Egbuka only four times in his debut, resulting in two catches for 13 yards.

NFL Thursday Night Football DFS Picks: Mid-Tier Plays

Chris Godwin, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers – DraftKings: $7,200 | FanDuel: $8,200

Godwin led Tampa Bay with seven targets and a 26.9% target share in Daniels' first start, catching six passes for 31 yards. The lack of yardage is concerning, but the volume and role leave room for optimism.

The Cowboys have been particularly vulnerable to slot receivers, where Godwin does the majority of his work. The concern is that Godwin's targets have averaged just 2.8 air yards so far, so he'll need significant reception volume or a touchdown to produce a big fantasy score.

Jake Ferguson, TE, Dallas Cowboys – DraftKings: $5,600 | FanDuel: $7,600

Ferguson has just 15 targets, 12 catches and 84 yards through four games, with three touchdowns doing most of the work for his fantasy value. His red-zone role keeps him relevant, with four red-zone targets and Dallas averaging more than 30 points per game.

The matchup is appealing, as Tampa Bay has allowed the sixth-most yards to tight ends this season. Now, the Bucs will be without safety Antoine Winfield, which could open up the middle of the field for Ferguson.

Cade Otton, TE, Tampa Bay Buccaneers – DraftKings: $4,400 | FanDuel: $5,800

Otton has seen at least five targets in every game this season and was heavily involved in Daniels' first NFL start, commanding a 22.2% target share and a team-best 28.6% first-read share. He finished that game with 37 receiving yards, but the usage suggests he could remain one of Daniels' preferred safety valves.

The Cowboys have allowed 211 yards and three touchdowns to tight ends through four weeks, so Otton could have some room to operate based on the matchup.

NFL Thursday Night Football DFS Picks: Value Plays

Ryan Flournoy, WR, Dallas Cowboys – DraftKings: $3,800 | FanDuel: $5,200

Flournoy's role is more encouraging than his raw production suggests. He's caught multiple passes in all four games, has at least 20 receiving yards in every game, and ran a route on 75.4% of Dallas' dropbacks last week. He also saw five targets against Houston, converting them into four catches for 37 yards.

If Dallas approaches its season scoring average, there should be enough opportunities for Flournoy to contribute even behind Lamb and Pickens.

Tez Johnson, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers – DraftKings: $2,200 | FanDuel: $3,800

Johnson's Week 4 usage leaves room for optimism on his future production. He played 34 snaps (56%) and ran a route on 50% of Tampa Bay's dropbacks, while Ted Hurst played 24 snaps (39%) and ran a route on 36%. In other words, Johnson's route participation was clearly ahead of Hurst's last week, suggesting Tampa Bay may be increasing his role.

Hurst was clearly the cheap Tampa Bay WR to target through the first three weeks, but Johnson could be a sneaky value option if last week's role sticks.

Kenny Gainwell, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers – DraftKings: $4,000 | FanDuel: $7,000

Last week Gainwell ran almost as many routes as Irving and out-targeted him 2-0, while scoring on a 10-yard reception from Daniels. That passing-down role could be particularly useful if Tampa Bay falls behind the Cowboys, who are favored by more than a touchdown.

His route involvement and receiving touchdown last week give him a more interesting ceiling than his season-long numbers indicate, especially if Tampa Bay is playing from behind.

TNF DFS Picks: Kickers & D/ST

Brandon Aubrey is coming off a Week 4 game in which he made only 2-of-4 field-goal attempts, but he still scored 11 fantasy points because Dallas generated four extra-point opportunities. Through four games, Aubrey has made 8-of-11 field goals and 12-of-13 extra points, while Dallas has consistently moved the ball into scoring range.

Chase McLaughlin has been excellent through four games, going 9-for-9 on field goals and 7-for-7 on extra points, including a perfect 3-for-3 performance from 50+ yards. Don't overlook him just because Tampa Bay is an underdog. His accuracy, distance, and the Bucs' likely red-zone struggles give him a path to a strong fantasy night.

The Cowboys D/ST is facing an undrafted rookie quarterback on a short week, who threw two interceptions in his debut last week. If Dallas builds a lead, Tampa should be forced into more obvious passing situations, creating additional sack and turnover opportunities.

The Buccaneers D/ST is missing key members of its secondary, which makes an already challenging assignment even tougher. The Cowboys have allowed plenty of production despite their scoring success, and Tampa's defense forced two turnovers in last week's loss to Green Bay. Treat Bucs D/ST as a contrarian tournament option with a low floor, but also potentially more ceiling than you might expect.
