Rams vs. Panthers Predictions For Sunday 1:00 PM ET, NFL Week 13

The Rams and Panthers have actually only faced each other once over the last five years. And that was back in 2022 when the Rams won 24-10. That was obviously before the Dave Canales and Bryce Young era so won’t factor much into our predictions for this week’s game.

The Rams have been one of the hottest teams in football lately. They’ve now one six straight which has them at 9-2 and in the lead for the NFC West. Their last loss came in a 26-23 overtime game vs. the 49ers but they have since beat the 49ers 42-26 in the rematch. The Panthers have had mixed results over that same span with a 3-3 record. Their three wins came against the Falcons, Packers, and Jets. The Packers win isn’t their only surprising upset this year as they also beat the Dallas Cowboys 30-27.

Los Angeles Rams: Highly Consolidated Offense

Sean McVay isn’t scared to lean on his stars. Folks will remember the year they won the Super Bowl heavily featuring Cooper Kupp. This year their top four players, Kyren Williams, Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, and Blake Corum, have accounted for 74% of the touches on the season. Teams know whether the ball is going but there’s not much they can really do about it.

The Rams defense is also quietly one of, if not the, best defense in the league. In fact, both Pro Football Focus and FTN’s DVOA stat have the Rams graded out as the top defense in the league right now. So this team has arguably the best unit on defense as well as the leading MVP candidate on offense in Matthew Stafford.

Carolina Panthers: Which Bryce Young Shows Up?

The success of the Carolina Panthers largely depends on which Bryce Young shows up. We’ve seen him fall flat a number of times in his young career, including last week where he threw for only 169 yards while throwing two interceptions. But we’ve also seen him deliver some big games. He threw for 448 yards and three touchdowns in the win vs. the Falcons. He’s also put together some three touchdown games, like the win vs. the Cowboys. It’s easy to forget that the Panthers took some good teams to the wire last year too like the Eagles and Chiefs.

The Panthers defense has not been particularly great. Most sources have them graded out as a bottom half unit overall. They do have a couple bright spots, like star corner Jaycee Horn who had two interceptions last week. They’ve also seen noticeable improvement against the run since new acquisition Tershawn Wharton returned from a hamstring injury. But we still wouldn’t describe them as a “good defense.”

Rams vs. Panthers: Chuba Hubbard Over 7.5 Receiving Yards (-115 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

Last week we saw a bit of a different running back rotation for the Carolina Panthers. Rico Dowdle was still the starter but Chuba Hubbard took a chunk of pass snaps. So instead of the highly consolidated backfield we typically see here, Dowdle played 30 snaps while Hubbard played 16.

That could be a trend that stays as Rico Dowdle has struggled mightily in pass protection this year. On 41 pass block snaps he’s allowed 11 pressures and 2 sacks. Conversely, on 30 pass block snaps, Chuba Hubbard has allowed only 1 pressure (which did happen to be a sack). Based on the sample size we have, Hubbard has had more success in that regard.

We might not be willing to bet the Rams to win by 11 or more. But we do expect the Rams to force the Panthers to throw. Last week in his role, Hubbard caught four passes for 27 yards. Hitting the over on 7.5 receiving yards is something that Hubbard could do on one reception. So that’s the play we like best this week from this game.
