The big story this week is Mike Vrabel’s return to his former team, the Tennessee Titans. Well, it’s a big story to us (according to him). He says there are two categories - interesting and important. And, that he thinks his return is interesting but, in terms of winning the game, it’s not important.

And, on that, he might be right. But there are some important things going on. The Titans did just fire their coach Brian Callahan. The Patriots are on their third straight road game. And both teams are dealing with various ailments. That does get filed under important and will factor into how we make predictions and picks for this game.

Patriots vs. Titans Predictions For Sunday 4:25 PM ET, NFL Week 7

These teams did meet quite often at one point when they were both making the playoffs. That was back when the Patriots had Brady and Vrabel was coaching for the other team. They’ve only played once over the last few years, however, with the Patriots losing 20-17 in overtime in Tennessee last year. As we know, these two teams finished with the worst two records in the league.

The Titans remain among the worst teams in the league. They currently sport a 1-5 record with their one win coming as a 22-21 victory over the Cardinals. The Patriots have had more success as they currently sit atop the AFC East with a 4-2 record. The feather in their cap so far has been a win over the 4-2 Buffalo Bills, giving them the current tiebreaker.

New England Patriots: Drake Maye’s Evolution

The team they have built around Drake Maye is certainly better this year than last year. Additions like offensive tackle Will Campbell and wide receiver Stefon Diggs have been crucial in some of these wins. But Maye himself has clearly taken a step in the right direction as well. He’s no longer living off scrambling around alone (though that remains part of his game). He’s now thrown for 260+ yards in four of his games this year including last week when he threw for 261 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions.

In free agency, the Patriots made a lot of their big splashes on the defensive side of the ball. What else would you expect from Mike Vrabel? Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, and Harold Landry have created some havoc up front. Robert Spillane has continued to be the tackle monster that he was for the Raiders. And Christian Gonzalez is healthy again and back to shutting down opposing WR1s.

Tennessee Titans: Missing Their Top Wide Receiver

The Titans were already struggling to get Cam Ward going this season. Now they’ll attempt to do it without their top wide receiver and biggest monetary investment on offense. Calvin Ridley, who left last game with an injury, has been ruled out for this week. That will see Elic Ayomanor and Van Jefferson elevated to full time guys on the outside with Tyler Lockett reprising his slot role. Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears should split the back field snaps.

On defense, the Titans have not been as stout as years past. Jeffery Simmons is still great and a disruptive player, but the unit as a whole has not been great, especially against the run where they rank as the sixth-worst team per DVOA. The offense isn’t doing them many favors in terms of keeping them off the field, so they are currently allowing 26.8 points per game, the seventh most of any team.

Patriots vs. Titans: Tyjae Spears Over 12.5 Receiving Yards (-110 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

The Patriots are the better football team - no doubt about that. But there are some narratives that make me nervous to bet on the Patriots to cover. Teams that fire their coach typically do get a little boost. And the Patriots are on their third straight road game which has proven to see a dip in performance. We aren’t better on the Titans because they are missing Ridley and they aren’t good, but we don’t want to lean on the Pats either.

What we will go in on is the recent narrative regarding the Titans running backs. Tyjae Spears is back to serve as the pass-catching back while Tony Pollard continues to start. That split actually saw Spears play more snaps than Pollard last week in a negative game script. And the Titans should find themselves in a negative game script yet again this week.

In that game, Spears played 36 snaps and, as part of that, he ran 26 routes. He also garnered four targets and caught all four for 19 yards. With Calvin Ridley out, the Titans are going to have to get creative with how they spread the ball around. And I think Spears can pretty easily get to 12.5 receiving yards with a couple catches.
