Lions vs. Packers Predictions for NFL Week 1, Sunday 9/7
A classic NFC North clash is always exciting, and there is even more hype when we have two teams that are also among the favorites to represent the entire conference in the Super Bowl. That said, Green Bay is actually a rather clear favorite according to the latest Lions vs. Packers odds.
While it’s still a tick under a field goal, it’s still one that we expected to be closer to a pick ‘em. It truly feels that it could go either way, even with the Pack adding Micah Parsons. He still needs to be in full football shape, not to mention his current back concerns.
Even without the elite pass rusher, Green Bay’s defense has improved since seasons past, while Detroit’s could use some improvement. Admittedly, some of the numbers are skewed, given that teams have been forced to catch up, given how great they’ve been under Dan Campbell.Â
We’re not in the business of sweating our Lions vs. Packers picks on a point spread when we think either team can win the game, so our best bet is focused elsewhere.

Lions vs. Packers Best Bet: Matthew Golden Over 3.5 Receptions (-139 at Novig)
So, if we’re not looking to sweat out a winner of a game that we think could go either way, what is our target? Surprisingly enough, while we don’t want to have to trust either team, we’re going to be trusting a rookie.
It may not have been the Shedeur Sanders-level attention, but fans were enamored with rookie WR Matthew Golden this past preseason. The Packers' first-round pick (#23 overall) played at both Texas and Houston, and they expect him to have an immediate impact. Even if they didn’t already, he’s going to have to step up.
Jordan Love’s targets have been a young group for a few seasons now, and perhaps the best of the bunch - Jayden Reed - is banged up right now. Thankfully for Golden, he gets to make his NFL regular-season debut against a rough secondary.
The Lions allowed the third-most passing yards per game last year, and given that they allowed the fifth-fewest rushing yards per game, the air is where to attack them. That’s what we’ve seen in recent meetings between these NFC North rivals; for example, Romeo Doubs leads the way with 16 receptions in just three games versus Detroit.
That’s over five receptions per game, and there’s a reason we want this market specifically. As much as we’d love some plus-money odds with a TD prop, Detroit’s pass defense is the perfect illustration of band-don’t-break.
While they allowed a ton of passing yardage, they actually allowed the second-FEWEST passing TDs last year. Therefore, the best bet from our Lions vs. Packers predictions is Matthew Golden over 3.5 receptions (-139at Novig).
