I was nervous. I was. I was nervous that we might have had a great matchup set this week between two teams that rarely play each other but we were going to be missing one of the quarterbacks. Luckily, Justin Herbert is healthy this year and Jayden Daniels is set to make his return. Game on.

Now, like most teams in the NFL after a couple weeks, that doesn’t mean that everyone is healthy. The Commanders are certainly down some weapons and the Chargers down some offensive linemen. But with the two QBs ready to go we should at least have ourselves a competitive game here. And one that might be worth betting on.

Commanders vs. Chargers Predictions For NFL Week 5, Sunday 4:25 PM ET

As we mentioned, these teams have only played twice over the last decade with the Chargers winning both games. The most recent game was in 2021 before the Jayden Daniels or the Jim Harbaugh eras began so not much information can be gleaned there.

The Commanders are now 2-2 on the season. They beat the Giants and the Raiders but fell to the Packers and the Falcons. It’s worth noting that they did not have starting quarterback Jayden Daniels for the Raiders or Falcons game. The Chargers are now 3-1. They started the season with wins against the Chiefs, Raiders, and Broncos, but fell to Jaxson Dart’s Giants last week.

Washington Commanders: Jayden Daniels Returns

They won’t get all their guys back from injury. But quarterback Jayden Daniels is by far the most important one. Austin Ekeler is obviously done for the year and Terry McLaurin has already been ruled out for this week, so they are still playing without a couple key cogs on offense regardless. Deebo Samuel was seen getting limited work in on Friday so we’ll have to see if he can go.

The Commanders defense has been middle of the pack in general. But they have certainly been stronger against the run than they have against the pass thus far. They’re actually a top-five team against the run per DVOA over at FTN Fantasy while ranking as a bottom-eight team against the pass so far this year. That’s been reflected in their raw numbers as well with them allowing the sixth-most yards of any team through the air.

Los Angeles Chargers: Surprisingly Heavy Passing

If you told me the Chargers would be a top-five team in pass attempts per game, I’d be surprised. If you told me that they would have three players all on pace for 110+ targets, something that virtually never happens, I would have said you were crazy. Yet here we are, as Greg Roman has abandoned his run heavy approach in favor of throwing to Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, and Keenan Allen.

On defense, the Chargers have been rock solid, led by all-world safety Derwin James. They are currently ranked seventh in DVOA, while being equally formidable against both the run and the pass. Tuli Tuipulotu has been extremely disruptive thus far - his 15 quarterback hurries are currently tied for third in the league.

Commanders vs. Chargers: Ladd McConkey Over 58.5 Receiving Yards (-118 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

At this stage, folks are starting to give up on Ladd McConkey - especially in the fantasy football communities. Even the sportsbooks are no longer listing him with the highest odds for Chargers receivers this week. And that’s fine with us - we’ll take those odds. Especially this week in a great matchup.

The Commanders nickel corner Mike Sainristil has been off to a rough start this season. Per Pro Football Focus, his 161 yards allowed to receivers out of the slot is the fourth-most allowed by any player through four games behind only Andru Philips and Dax Hill. You would think that Keenan Allen would be playing the most slot for the Chargers, but McConkey has actually run 111 slot routes to 66 for Allen and 26 for Quentin Johnston.

Yes, Johnston and Allen have outperformed McConkey so far early on. But the matchup this week with a tough Commanders run defense and a weak spot at the slot is screaming for a Ladd McConkey game. Add to the offensive line woes for the Chargers requiring them to get the ball out quick and it’s a play I feel good about. The over on his 4.5 reception line at Bet MGM is juiced up to -145 so we’re taking the yardage at over 58.5. And, when Ladd McConkey leads the team in receiving this week, fantasy football gamers are probably going to be walking away even more confused than they were before about this Chargers receiving corps.
