These two teams in particular catch a lot of grief in the NFL. The Cleveland Browns and the New York Jets. But I’ll tell you what, folks. It wasn’t long ago that the Detroit Lions were viewed in virtually the same light - perhaps even worse, for a stretch there. Now they are a respected organization. As the great John Madden once said, “Winning is a great deodorant”.

The Browns are starting to understand what that quote is all about. At 3-1, they currently sit atop the AFC North. It’s even gotten to the point where some fans are starting to accept embattled quarterback Deshaun Watson. And, at the very least, the rest of the fans have to be pleased with what Todd Monken is doing with these young weapons.

And the New York Jets are actually looking better this year as well. They won their first game, though injuries to guys like Breece Hall and Adonai Mitchell have kind of spoiled the last few games. Like the Browns, who drafted KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston with their first two picks, the Jets used theirs on Kenyon Sadiq and Omar Cooper Jr. So there’s a lot of hope in New York as well.

🏅 Browns vs. Jets Expert Pick: Deshaun Watson Over 26.5 Rushing Yards (-108 on DraftKings Sportsbook)

Deshaun Watson has been winning games. And he’s been converting a lot of third and even fourth downs. But one thing that’s flying under the radar is how much Watson has been running (probably because he has zero rushing touchdowns). But he’s been flying around out there - and that’s been by design.

Watson has the second most rushes of any quarterback behind only Josh Allen. And, if you remove the scrambles, quarterback sneaks, and kneel-downs to get just the pure designed runs, they are actually tied with 10. Todd Monken has brought over a lot of the concepts he used with Lamar Jackson.

Watson has gone over this number in two of his four games, but he actually should have been over last week too. There was a very strange play with some miscommunication that looked like a strip sack by TJ Watt. But because a lineman went downfield, it was ruled a rush for Watson, which counted as a -8 yard run. Without that on the scoresheet, he has a better day running the ball, and I doubt this line is set so low this week.

🏉 Browns vs. Jets Injury Report & Latest News

The Browns got blown out in Week 1, but have since rattled off three straight wins. They are hoping to stay atop the AFC North with another win here. The Browns’ injury situation up front on defense is significant heading into Sunday as defensive tackles Mason Graham (knee) and Mike Hall Jr. (ankle) are both out, a damaging blow to a defensive line that has been counted on to generate pressure. Most of the other injuries are to some of the depth pieces; Carsen Ryan, wide receiver Tylan Wallace, and offensive lineman Teven Jenkins also won’t play, and backup quarterback Dillon Gabriel was placed on injured reserve this week. The Browns have been susceptible through the air, so we’ll have to see how they fare against Garrett Wilson here.

The New York Jets are 1-3 and, though there is more hope in the building than past years, that hope is starting to dwindle. Injuries have really sapped the upside that we saw from this offense in Week 1. Running back Breece Hall is out, a major blow considering he leads the team with 163 rushing yards and has been a key piece in the passing game as well. Wide receiver Adonai Mitchell is also out, stripping away the No. 2 option behind Garrett Wilson. Tight end Mason Taylor (thumb) could provide a boost if he returns, but the real pass-catching hopes at tight end come from first-round pick Kenyon Sadiq. Aaron Glenn’s team has shown it can compete as both losses to Green Bay and Detroit were one-possession games. But you don’t get any points for close losses in the NFL.
