NFL Training Camp Updates, Live News, Injuries: Washington Commanders Offense Struggles
Commanders' Offense Struggles Without Terry McLaurin
Despite several exciting additions this offseason, including the acquisitions of Deebo Samuel from the San Fransico 49ers and Laremy Tunsil from the Houston Texans, the biggest headline surrounding the Washington Commanders has been the trade request from star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. McLaurin has been “holding in” for a new contract from the team, and it appears that his offensive coordinator is growing impatient as both sides wait to get a deal done.
Overall, offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury's unit has been struggling so far in NFL training camp. Kingbury believes this is due to some key pieces missing, most notably Terry McLaurin. He is also currently without his other outside receiver, Noah Brown, and his two starting guards, Samuel Cosmi and Brandon Coleman. The Commanders look to get this offense on track while turning to other playmakers like Deebo Samuel and Luke McCaffrey.
Indianapolis Colts QB Battle Update
Who would have thought that one of the most pivotal stories in our NFL Training Camp Updates would be the Indianapolis Colts' quarterback battle between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones? Certainly not me, but the two quarterbacks have been neck and neck, with each producing up and down performances. With a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers tomorrow, head coach Shane Steichen acknowledges that he is hoping for a frontrunner in the competition to emerge sooner rather than later so he can name a Week One starter.
With Anthony Richardson consistently producing highlight plays like this one (along with his constant frustrating overthrows), could he ultimately win the job?
New Orleans Saints Training Camp Update - Drew Brees Returns
While New Orleans Saints fans are probably hoping that Drew Brees coming back to NFL Training Camp means he is coming out of retirement to quarterback the team once again, that is unfortunately not the case. That being said, Brees did visit Saints camp today and got to interact with several coaches and players, including former teammates Brandin Cooks and Taysom Hill.
Hopefully, he got to share some wisdom with the current quarterback room as well, which now seems to be a two-man battle for the QB1 spot between second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler and rookie Tyler Shough, who have each had up-and-down camps thus far. The Saints play the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday in a preseason battle that will possibly see one of the two quarterbacks separate themselves for the starting role.
NFL Training Camp Highlights - Caleb Williams to Rome Odunze Connection Shines
It wouldn't be an NFL Training Camp Update without some highlights! Today's highlights take us to the joint practice between the Buffalo Bills and Chicago Bears, where both teams put up an impressive battle against one another. With a serious spotlight on Caleb Williams to perform in year two, he has started to show more consistency in training camp. This is especially visible with the connection to fellow second-year player Rome Odunze, whom he found for multiple touchdowns today against the Bills' starting defense.
Maybe Williams and Odunze can develop a connection like Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase, who continue to ball out in their training camp practices.
NFL Training Camp Injury Update & Transactions: Travis Hunter Injured
Travis Hunter Injury Update
Many people have been questioning whether it will really be possible for rookie Travis Hunter to play both sides of the ball. Can his body hold up? Well, today, he finds himself on the injury report for the first time, as head coach Liam Coen held Hunter out of practice due to an upper-body injury. The two-way player is unlikely to suit up for the Jaguars' preseason matchup with the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
Matthew Stafford Injury Update
It has been a strange training camp for Matthew Stafford, who has been dealing with a back injury. While reports suggested that he would return to practice this week, that was not the case, as Stafford did not feel up to it after a workout over the weekend. Reportedly, Stafford will once again be taking part in a weekend workout in hopes that his back responds better this time. Stafford and head coach Sean McVay still expect the 37-year-old quarterback to suit up for Week One.
Tyler Bass Injury Update
Buffalo Bills kicker Tyler Bass has been dealing with a pelvic injury this offseason. He is continuing to progress from his injury and is hoping to make his return during the Bills' preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on August 23rd.
