Welcome to the Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire Report! The waiver wire is key to winning. It helps you improve on the team you drafted, and to help patch holes when players go down due to injury. It’s something most managers will monitor daily. Let’s take a look at who we should be adding this week.

Chandler Stephenson - Vegas Golden Knights - Center/Winger

Is Chandler Stephenson relevant again? The center had a breakout year last season, and quietly this season, leads the team in goals, assists and points. So why is he only 46% owned in Yahoo! Leagues? That’s a great question, and one that we don’t have an answer for. The loss of Mark Stone and Max Pacioretty haven’t affected him, and while he doesn’t take a ton of shots on goal, he’s doing enough to land himself a starting job on a fantasy hockey team. 

Rasmus Asplund - Buffalo Sabres - Winger

Another non-sexy player, but Rasmus Asplund is seeing a healthy amount of ice time and is scoring goals. He has three goals in the last two games and continues to see over 17-minutes a night regularly. To top it all off-- he has triple-position eligibility on Yahoo!, so you can use him in any position. He probably won’t help you win a championship, but with so many players out of the lineup due to COVID-19, he can be a short-term solution with some upside.

Karel Vejmelka - Arizona Coyotes - Goalie

Look, I know what you’re thinking, but hear me out. The Coyotes are an awful team, and they are going to lose A LOT of hockey games. They are one of two teams who went winless in October, so why are we grabbing a backup goalie on a winless team? Real simple: the 25-year-old is actually not that bad. In five starts this season, he’s stopped 183 of 199 shots, which works out to a .920 SV%, which is better than Jusse Saros (.917), Adrei Vasilevskiy (.911) and Robin Lehner (.911). We know he’s not going to keep this up, but in leagues that count shots on goal and SV%, Vejmelka is gold, and he’s free on almost every platform. The losses will hurt, but if your league settings don’t penalize you too much for those, he’s a great third goalie to add and spot start.

Dawson Mercer - New Jersey Devils - Center

Three points and 11 shots on goal in the last three games for Dawson Mercer. With Jack Hughes out of the lineup, the rookie is getting a chance to see a decent amount of ice time on the second line and second power play unit. The 11 shots is what stands out, because it’s nice to see a kid willing to take a lot of shots on goal. When that happens, you’re going to score goals, and he’s been able to find a couple in the last few. Another forward who is basically free on all platforms that can be a short-term solution.

Kale Clague - Los Angeles Kings - Defence

You may not know who this kid is, but he’s got two points in as many games and is seeing time on the top power play unit. He’s not going to tear up the league, but in really deep formats, as long as he’s seeing an opportunity to produce, he should be on a roster. He doesn’t do much when it comes to shooting the puck and blocking shots, so target him in leagues where points matter.
