NFL DFS Week 1 D/ST Picks 2026: Top DraftKings & FanDuel Defenses

Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season is finally here. And with it come some outstanding DFS contests on both DraftKings and FanDuel. We have a fun slate with 12 games on tap. That gives us 24 teams to choose from, so we have to pick and choose carefully.

But as is always the case when we build out our winning NFL DFS lineups, we certainly want to land on the top-scoring defensive unit with our NFL DFS Week 1 DST picks. But we don’t want to sacrifice too much integrity with our lineups. This is the last piece of the puzzle because this is a position of variance. Fortunately, the pricing for the skill position players is traditionally soft for the first week of the NFL season. We should be able to build our lineups without many restrictions.

NFL DFS Week 1 DST Picks

Jacksonville Jaguars – DraftKings: $3,400 | FanDuel: $5,000

The pricing for the Jaguars is not an issue on DraftKings this week. On FanDuel, they are the max price, but Week 1 pricing is typically soft across the board, and it shouldn’t be an issue fitting them in among your NFL DFS Week 1 DST picks.

The Jags have arguably the easiest matchup on paper this week. They’re 8.5-point favorites at home against the lowly Cleveland Browns, who welcome new head coach Todd Monken. This game also features an over/under of just 40.5 points, which gives the Browns an implied team total of just 16 points.

The Browns are due for another tumultuous season where Deshaun Watson will begin the campaign as the team’s starting quarterback, but it would surprise nobody if he was benched early in the season for Shedeur Sanders. But the Jags re-signed Montaric Brown in the offseason, and they also brought back Dennis Gardeck. And rumors are swirling that they may use Travis Hunter largely at defensive back to start the year. This is also a home game, and that Florida heat/humidity combo is still thriving in North Florida, which gives the Jags another edge for this Week 1 matchup.

Pittsburgh Steelers – DraftKings: $3,300 | FanDuel: $4,900

The Steelers get a home matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons offense is pretty much all set in stone with the exception of the quarterback position, which is arguably the most important position in all of professional sports. Tua Tagovailoa will get the start. He’s got weapons and a pretty good offensive line blocking him up front. However, Tua looked completely lost during the preseason. You can look up any meme or social media troll job saying he lost the QB job in a competition where he was the only option.

Tagovailoa is obviously prone to mistakes and taking a beating behind the line of scrimmage. But even in the preseason he was making errors daily, and the training camp reports drew a lot of concern. And while the offensive line is still fine and should perform like a top-12 group, former offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford left to join the Baltimore Ravens.

It’s a road matchup in a tough environment, and the Falcons are certainly underdogs. But this is a matchup where the Steelers should play disruptors and not allow Tua to find any rhythm. This matchup is one where we could certainly see a pick-six for a DST.

Houston Texans – DraftKings: $2,900 | FanDuel: $4,400

The matchup is obviously tough against the Buffalo Bills, but the Texans are at home where they’re slight 1.5-point underdogs. These two teams met last season, and the Texans forced three turnovers, collected eight sacks, and returned double-digit fantasy points. The Texans, and the next DST I’ll cover for the NFL DFS Week 1 DST picks, apply pressure at a very high rate.

The crazy thing about Houston is that they blitzed at just a 16.7% rate last season, according to Yahoo! Fantasy Sports. That low rate ranked last among the league, but they still touted a 40.3% pressure rate per Fantasy Points Data, which ranked seventh among all 32 defenses. When these two teams met last season, seven of the eight sacks on Josh Allen were without a blitz package.

The matchup could certainly scare most NFL DFS players away, and I can understand why. But Houston still brings a lethal defense into this matchup. It largely carried them into the playoffs a year ago and will likely be the reason for their success in 2026. So we can’t write this team off simply because they’re playing the Buffalo Bills. We know Josh Allen is prone to turnovers, and this defense could give Buffalo’s offense plenty of frustration.

Minnesota Vikings – DraftKings: $2,800 | FanDuel: $4,000

This recommendation for our NFL DFS Week 1 DST picks is largely built on the assumption that Brian Flores is going to send the blitz on about 50% of his team’s defensive snaps. That’s about on par with how often this defense blitzed in 2025.

Do the Vikings have the biggest names on the defensive side of the ball? Not necessarily. But they are proactive and are actively trying to get to the opposing quarterback. Green Bay won’t have Josh Jacobs for this contest; the wide receiver room saw some turnover in the offseason, and the offensive line ranked towards the bottom of most offensive line rankings heading into this season.

The Vikings used their first three NFL Draft picks to address the defense by adding Caleb Banks, Jake Golday, and Domonique Orange. The Vikings will have the benefit of having home-field advantage for this divisional matchup, and as a sub-$3K option on DraftKings, you can play them at least knowing they’re trying to sack the quarterback every other play.

Best NFL DFS DST Values for Week 1

Best DraftKings DST Value – Cincinnati Bengals $2,700

For those of you who follow me and discuss lineup construction with me in our NFL DFS Discord channel, you’ll know I exclusively play on DraftKings with occasional exposure to FanDuel. I mention this because if someone were to ask me if I’ll actually play the Bengals in my own personal lineups, I’d say it’s very unlikely. The point I’ve tried hammering home in this article is that value always emerges at the skill positions for NFL DFS. And that’s no different for Week 1 when pricing is already soft across the board. So it’s easy to spend up for the Chargers, Jaguars, Eagles, Steelers, etc.

But if you find yourself in a pinch, one can make an argument to play the Cincinnati Bengals. Does this game have shootout potential? Of course. And there’s the stigma that the Bengals DST is still putrid, as we’ve seen in recent years, but there have been efforts to really improve this unit.

On the defensive line alone, they traded for Dexter Lawrence. Through free agency, they signed Boye Mafe fresh off a Super Bowl win, and they also brought in Jonathan Allen. Then they went and drafted edge rusher Cashius Howell and defensive back Tacario Davis on Day 2 of the 2026 NFL Draft.

This game is at home, and the Tampa Bay wide receiver room is rather beat up going against a revamped Bengals defense. So if you can’t quite get to one of the coveted defenses in the $3,000+ range on DraftKings, then I’m more than happy to play the Bengals at a value price tag because this group likely doesn’t garner much ownership.

Best FanDuel DST Value – Miami Dolphins $3,000

It is not pretty by any means, but with Brock Bowers likely out for this Week 1 matchup, I can stomach playing the Miami Dolphins as an absolute punt on FanDuel. The Dolphins will go on the road, so the game is in a controlled environment. But they’re only three-point road underdogs.

The Raiders did make some upgrades in the offseason. They hired a new head coach, Klint Kubiak. They upgraded their offensive line a little bit. And the quarterback room is improved with the additions of Fernando Mendoza and Kirk Cousins. Cousins will get the start for this matchup, and he’ll be without the team’s best pass catcher.

Miami may not have the best ceiling, but they made some efforts to improve the defense from a year ago. Most notably, the team added defensive back Chris Johnson toward the end of round one. Then in round two, they added linebacker Jacob Rodriguez out of Texas Tech.

Again, this isn’t a high-ceiling play. But if you have a lineup you like and are forced into rostering a bare minimum squad on FanDuel, then I’m leaning towards the Dolphins for our NFL DFS Week 1 DST picks.

NFL DFS DST Fade for Week 1

Atlanta Falcons – DraftKings: $2,600 | FanDuel: $3,700

This probably comes across as a layup pick, and you might be right. But when I’m looking at defenses and special teams, I do lean into squads that have a good pass rush. And the Falcons are lacking quality pass rushers and depth to boot.

James Pearce Jr. is serving an eight-game suspension after he recorded 10.5 sacks during his rookie season a year ago. The Falcons' other first-round selection from the 2025 NFL Draft, Jalon Walker, tore his ACL about two weeks into training camp. This pass rush was hurting almost immediately, and it’s quite possible this team realizes they’ll be throwing the season away early on.

The Steelers reunited Mike McCarthy with Aaron Rodgers for the latter’s final NFL season. They brought in some reinforcements on offense with Michael Pittman and Rico Dowdle, and they drafted wide receiver Germie Bernard out of Alabama.

The Steelers are at home for this matchup, and the Falcons are 3.5-point underdogs, which feels generous by the sportsbooks. But I don’t see much of a ceiling for this DST, and I have no interest in including them in my player pool for my NFL DFS Week 1 DST picks.

NFL DFS Week 1 DST Play of the Week

Philadelphia Eagles – DraftKings: $3,200 | FanDuel: $4,500

I don’t want to follow the herd and lean into the Chargers or the Jaguars as the Play of the Week. Both teams, especially the Jaguars, will draw plenty of ownership. And rightfully so! But the Eagles get a home matchup against their division rivals, the Washington Commanders. The Birds are 4.5-point favorites, and the total is sitting at a respectable 46.5 points as of this writing.

But the Eagles' pass rush should have no issue at all with the offensive line for Washington. The Commanders could very well have the worst offensive line in the league, and it only got worse when Laremy Tunsil tore his triceps during training camp. Pressure leads to sacks and turnovers. And Philadelphia still boasts a pretty strong secondary that can be tough to throw on.

Divisional matchups are always tough. But this is also Week 1, and teams are struggling to find their groove, especially on the offensive side of the ball, as we saw during Wednesday night’s opener. So while other defenses may have a better floor than Philly, part of me thinks the Eagles could boast the highest ceiling given how depleted the Washington offensive line is.
