It has been a volatile year in NFL survivor pools and a big upset almost happened last week. The Green Bay Packers were a popular pick and needed overtime to hold off the New England Patriots. Unlike last week, NFL Week 5 has six games with a line of at least seven points or more. The biggest favorite this week is the Buffalo Bills by 14 points at home against Pittsburgh. NFL Week 5 Survivor Picks

1) Buffalo Bills

The Bills return home after pulling out a comeback against the Ravens following a road loss to Miami, and they are now the biggest favorites of the season. The Steelers will start rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett behind a bad offensive line in a tough place to play. The Steelers have lost three straight games and Pickett replaced Mitch Trubisky in the second half and threw three interceptions in a loss to the Jets. The Bills defense shut out the Ravens in the second half last week, coming back from a 20-3 deficit to win 23-20. The Steelers defense isn't the same without T.J. Watt and have some other injuries that will make it difficult to slow down the Bills offense. Many might look to save the Bills. Although it's dangerous to do that with all the land mines this season, this is a week with multiple good options.

2) Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Buccaneers have their flaws and are coming off two consecutive losses. One was a two-point loss to the Packers and the other was a 41-31 loss to the Chiefs. The Falcons aren't close to those teams. The Buccaneers, who are nine-point favorites, finally have all of their wide receivers and scored a season-high 31 points last week after not topping 20 points in the first three games. The defense allowed 27 points in the first three games before Patrick Mahomes shredded them. Atlanta has been competitive in every game and coming off two straight wins against the Seahawks and Browns. Marcus Mariota hasn't played well and attempted only 20 passes in Week 3 and 19 last week. The Buccaneers have played a difficult schedule with their first four opponents being a combined 10-6.

3) San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers are a bad matchup for most teams and especially for an inept Panthers' offense. The 49ers have one of the top defenses in the NFL while allowing 3.8 yards per play, being first in the NFL in defensive DVOA, and generating the most quarterback pressure. The Panthers are 1-26 when the opponent scores at least 17 points under coach Matt Rhule. The 49ers didn't allow a touchdown to the Rams on Monday night. The Panthers didn't score a touchdown until the final five minutes against a bad Cardinals defense last week. Baker Mayfield has a 54.7% completion rate with four touchdowns, three interceptions and has fumbled six times, losing one. The 49ers have allowed 46 points in four games.

Last week: 2-1

Season: 8-3-1
